While people in the world of golf are somewhat shocked by how Tiger Woods lost his game, what is even more amazing to me, is one Randolph Morrissett..  The man, who ungraciously calls himself, "Golf's most beloved" has gone avante grade as a recent trip to the West Coast this week showed.  I met up with him in Las Vegas and we flew up to San Francisco.  He was dressed in a 1950s style blazer and wearing blue accented horned toad glasses.. He thought he looked stylish, I just thought he was a bit oh, fuddy duddy.  The trash talking started immediately as we played a match at a San Francisco area club.  He shamelessly asked for strokes considering he had been manhandled by me his last two matches on two continents.  Unfortunately, I am duck hooking more than Aflac and told Ran we would play even up.  Somehow, I blew a 3 up lead for a halve after Ran got up and down from a buried lie on the final hole after playing +1 golf on his last 9 holes.  A shame for me, but at least he didn't win.

What made me laugh with glee though was the next day as Ran played behind me versus Joel Stewart furiously looking for his furtive attempts at gamesmanship by hitting his tee shots off into groves of Cypress trees and other assorted vegetation.  I think Joel closed him out 5 and 4.

Basically, Ran's tidy scratch game is so far gone, I think a 10 handicap can take him.  His club bounces more at the top than an enhanced bosom at a South Florida den of inequity.

Weep for him, as I once told an old girlfriend, "It's over!"

Sounds like Ran needs a cravat and a Deal (deckchair) blazer.

Noel in my Menzies semi on Sunday from two up on the 14th tee I lost on 17th. After I failed to get up and down on 14 & 15, the oppo stiffed it on 16 and holed a 5 iron for eagle on 17! See you next Friday.

A match can slip away quickly.  Played in a four ball match at the Valley Club Sunday.  After parring 11 and 12, I missed a 3'er on 13 that would have put my side 2 up.  We then lost the next three and halved 17 to lose 2 and 1.  One of our opponents birdied 14, skulled a chip on 15 into and out of a bunker for a par, then made 40'er on 16 for par.   Life is not always fair.

Was Ran armed with the hickories?

But then again, sometimes you are on the opposite side.

I was playing in a best ball match last weekend and we were 2 down with 3 to play.

I parred the 16th to win the hole, (bird putt lipped out)... and then birdied the 440 yard par 4 18th to finish the match at AS after we were down pretty much the entire back 9.

That felt pretty darn good!!   ;D

Nah,

With some buddies here in Spokane.  Although I did birdie 18 at Chambers as well.  Too bad the match was over already after the 17th hole.  :-X

Ran’s game has declined but his spirit and enthusiasm has not.

So the story begins 2 years ago when I played a friendly match with him at TPC Stonebrae and he made every putt he looked at and beat me 4 and 3.  For the last few years, the gloating and badgering became insistent.

The opportunity to play him at Cypress Point was just too good to be true.

The match began with Ran hitting a big hook on the 1st hole which resulted in him having to pitch out.  Low and behold, he was able to salvage a bogey which won the hole when I 3 putted for double.  Not deterred, I was calm and collected.  He hit his tee shot on the 2nd hole out of bounds which began a string of mis fires that allowed me to build a 5 up lead after 12 holes.

He birdies the 13th and I made bogey on the 14th which brought the match to 3 up.  He then threatened me that if I gagged this big lead, he would write the story on GCA and lock it on the first page for the rest of my life.

We came to the 15th and we elected to play the original Mackenzie tee.  145 yards to a back hole location.  His swing was good but he pulled his shot into the left bunker.  I knew this was an opportunity to close him out.  I elected to hit 8 iron and the ball never left the flag and finished 2 feet away.  His shoulders fell and he knew the end was only moments away.  His bunker shot went over the green which was anti climatic as I sank the putt to win 4 and 3.

As we left the green I asked him to walk to the clubhouse in defeat.  Dazed and confused, he begged me to let him play the famed 16th at Cypress Point.  I relented, not wishing to see this man fall any further into despair.

Shockingly, he rejuvenated himself on one of the great walks in golf.  He arrived at the 16th and took the tee out of turn?  He elected to hit 3 wood and although it was on the right, found a thin path of grass, with an easy chip to the pin.

I also choose a 3 wood.  With a mighty swing the ball launched like a heat seeking missile.    All on the tee knew we had just witnessed the shot of the day as it tracked for the hole.  I had visions of the 10th hole in one on the famed hole, possibly honorary membership!!!  It landed just a few feet from the hole and rolled some 20 feet by.

Ran’s chip left him some 5 feet away.

I on the other hand was cheered on by the caddies.  They told me the story of the famed “22” club for those who make 2’s on both the 15th and 16th.  Again my chance for history.  I had putted well for the entire summer and hit my ball exactly as I wished.  As it approached the hole, Ran yelled “it has a chance” but it didn’t move off the line and missed by 2 inches to the left.  Fittingly, Ran sank his putt for par.  We finished the day with pars on both the 17th and 18th as well.

I wonder if it was merely a case of intimidation as he viewed your prodigious drives.  Ran and I played Bandon Dunes together last year and he played an incredibly fine round using his hickories - perhaps they are the answer to his swing problems.

What I meant was, where was that level of play when you blundered your way to another loss to Garland?  You'da kicked his a$$!

Bill,

Trust me I know.  I just played another match with a GCA'er this morning, Peter Herrid.  We tied after 18 holes at Indian Canyon and he's a 10.  I figure my home course advantage was just barely enough to make a game of it. Had the course to ourselves, played in just over 3 hrs, and I shot an 87 from the blues.

Maybe I need to take a road trip over to Portland in November and get another grudge match in.  I can't wait until May to destroy Garland at KP in Canada.

Kalen,

It's great to talk a big game, like you did before the last GM, but at 0-2 I would choose your words more carefully! :P

Noel,

At what handicap was Ran Masquerading at ?
What's your handicap ?

He seems to have perfected that first tee snap hook.

When he doesn't fall victim to the snaps, he plays pretty well for a 12 handicapper.

He putted very well against me, but, I think that comes from the confidence he gets from receiving 4 to 6 shots in excess of the handicap differential. ;D

Joel, what's your handicap and what were the strokes in the match ?

There are no strokes in our match, strokes are for wimps.  I'm playing to about an 8 and so is he.

On the 36th hole of our day, one of our playing partners gave him a lesson and discussed spine angle with him.  On the 36th hole, the 18th at MPCC, Ran hits 3 wood - 5 iron to about 5 feet.  Typical in golf, it inspired him.  The follow day, Ran flies down to LA and plays Riviera and calls me in utter happiness how well he is now hitting it.

Reading all the chatter about one's golf game reminds me of Bobby Locke having a drink after the round and greeting chaps coming into the bar after holing out at the 18th. When the great man asked how they did, it sounded just like the the stuff above. Locke cut it short by saying, " The score laddie, no narrative."
