« on: August 31, 2011, 01:04:06 PM »
I received the e-mail below, unsolicited. Have others been courted? Is it a good thing? Is it a bad thing? Or is it Spam?

You have been recommended as a review panelist for the Golf Hole Hall of Fame.

http://www.golfholehalloffame.org/

The Golf Hole Hall of Fame is dedicated to honoring individual golf holes for their outstanding qualities in the areas of (1) Strategy, (2) Enjoyment, (3) Memorability, (4) Aesthetics, and (5) Acclaim. Honorary inductees include golf holes that have achieved high status for qualities within a particular region or category of course.

The Golf Hole Hall of Fame is not connected with any media or advertising entity, ensuring that the collection not be influenced by advertising or promotional funding.

Mark, This has been sent out before. Several years ago, if memory serves. I believe one of the architects on the board sends it out. (Don't hold me to that) but, it possibly has dual use.

I couldn't finish filling it out, because I realized it assumed I knew something, and since I certainly haven't seen every hole, how could I make such a judgement.

I'm pretty sure this is the highest of the high honors regarding golf course architecture.  It is my understanding only the greatest minds in all of golf get invited to be part of the panel.

If that's so, then why is the only hall of fame hole in Oregon the 18th at Fazio Pronghorn?
 :P

EDIT: It seems their search function doesn't know that Pacific Dunes is in Oregon.

Does this imply that you're a member?  ;)

Interesting. I believe I remember seeing this website a while ago.

Who runs the website?

A golf hole hall of fame sounds stupid. Some people need to get lives, or kill themselves but let's draw the line at a golf hole hall of fame. What is the criteria? When 17 at Sawgrass get's it's 3000th ball in the water does that get it in? This idea is actually silly by even the standards of this site.

I'm not as critical - I think it would make for an interesting wing or exhibit at the USGA museum or world golf hall of fame. We focus so much on championship golfers in our hall of fames and museums - how about the courses themselves? Seems like an interesting concept to me.

If these holes are the first 40 odd that the 'raters' thought about, I am not so sure I would want to be in this group.

Agreed. There are quite a few missing. However, I think it begs the question, which holes would you include/nominate?

Off the top of my head and ignoring holes already inducted, I think I'd nominate:

12 at shore acres
16 at port royal
17 at the ocean course at kiawah
10 at the plantation course at sea island
12 at Erin hills
4 at baltusrol, lower
17 at baltusrol. Lower
15 at somerset hills (an all-time favorite)

I think this is an interesting concept because there plenty of mediocre courses with a spectacular hole thrown in...

Hahahahahaha love it. Have you played that hole?

On a serious note, I think the concept behind the hall itself is meritorious. I mean we talk about the "best" holes all the time. They just need our  help identifying some better ones perhaps.

Aren't they going to wind up with like 6 trillion holes in the Hall?
