Merion Golf Club (East) (1912) – Hugh Wilson

I take it you're feeling feisty today...  ;D

OK, seriously, your Pebble attribution is incomplete.  Chandler Egan and MacKenzie did a lot of work there in 1929 (best to confirm the date).

Shivas:

A lot of the names and dates in these lists were pulled from the magazine websites.  I was amazed at the disparity in the information included in the various sources.  Some opted to use the date of the initiation of the project, while others appeared to use the date of completion.  And unsurprisingly, the attributed architects were not always consistent.

Thanks for the update.  What years did you do your work at the Old White and CC of Virginia?

Thanks,

Shoreacres (1916) -- Seth Raynor

Howard:

Shoreacres is listed elsewhere as 1921 and is included on the list for the 1920's.  Will look into the appropriate date.

You're correct.  I was thrown by the club's founding in 1916.  The course opened in 1921.

1912 A. Vernon Macan opens Royal Colwood on Vancouver Island beginning a distinguished career in GCA.  Oops, US courses wanted.

Sven, I am going to bring up Royal Colwood again, even though I realize your Title specifies US courses.  Construction began on, the then named, Colwood Golf and Country Club in 1913 and it had its unofficial opening in 1914.  It was the first course by AV Macan, who is the most important and prolific architect to work in the Pacific Northwest.

But the primary reason I bring Colwood forward is that it was the first golf course on the West Coast, and I believe west of the Mississippi, to be designed using a set of architectural principles.  Macan's principles, recently revealed by Mike Riste in his biography of the architect, are based on the work of John Low and are similar to those espoused by Colt, MacKenzie and Alison.

To leave out Royal Colwood, it seems to me, is to leave a hole in the lists you and other are compiling, lists which I think are a valuable resource, particularly if the reasons for inclusion of various courses are included.

Besides, Victoria lies south of the 49th parallel, so we must hold some sort of honourary status  ;D
I've seen an architecture, something new, that has been in my mind for years and I am glad to see a man with A.V. Macan's ability to bring it out. - Gene Sarazen

Dale -

You've convinced me.  I'll add it in.  Also, first post updated.

Sven, thank you.  Now that the crack in the door is opened, there is other significant Canadian courses others may wish to bring forward (Toronto, Hamilton, Victoria, etc.)!!!  One small point, the year given to Royal Colwood should be 1913, not 1912.
