Shinny and NGLA rumor....

Supposedly there is complimentary golf if you carry your own bag later today and tomorrow.  But you can't take the subway back to the city.

I had a friend in CT invite me to play Sunday, but he did not say where. He belongs to a cool little 9 holer in Litchfield County and he has some family at Fishers Island.

He cancelled on me but I told him that I would still show if it was Fishers! Here is a good tracking map:

Hopefully the winds will continue to diminish but Jones Beach and Fire Island are not the places to be tomorrow, right now. Yale is right in the cross hairs on the Connecticut side.

Mike,
you think you could get me a deal on one of those Rolexes at Battery Park before they close it down?

Be safe....

Mike,

I had heard that you could play several of the "icons" of golf, including some in NJ.

I'm heading out the door right now to try to get in 18.

Is there some motive to this, as in being able to say they opened their very private golf courses to the public, which might buy them PR points, once people forget it was offered on a day that was least likely to generate play?

Just wondering.

Mike:

While it is certainly a scary time for the greater NY area (and my prayers go out to everyone that lives there), that is one funny post.  Being that there will not be anyone on Long Island, I am thinking of getting in my car and playing Sebonack and Friar's Head in addition to Shiny and NGLA.   Might be my only opportunity.

Jeff,
I really don't know what their motive was... ;)I think it was like one of those theories of evolution type deals.  you know like where all the dorks go out that way to play and then no golf dorks....none to be found...

Anthony,
I just hope they keep that grape jelly and peanut butter dry.

I'm sure the Pine Valley Police Department is running at full force.  A smart man wouldn't try to sneak on there!

If the rain stops around noon here and 2/3 there; if we get no damage; if our electricity is on; if my wife doesn't have me committed, then I would entertain an offer. I would not go by myself!

Mike,

As in anyone who tries to play today is not smart enough to be a member?

My bet is they get the priest from Caddyshack and not much else.

So, good news and bad news. The good news is that the hurricane was not nearly as strong as we feared, so I went out to Shinny to cash in my free round. The course is not in bad shape, and the few trees it has are fine. The wind was still blowing pretty hard, so I almost drove the first green.
Now the bad news, neither club employees, nor the Southampton Town Police had heard of this gracious offer!

The day after the storm is a great day to play on a well drained course. Actually within a few hours after it passes is the best of all. I love apre hurricane golf

NGLA was great as usual. Because of the wind I hit alot of off balance shots which my fellow golfers didn't notice to be abnormal. I got off to a strong start with a bogey at nomber one. With the wind behind me I drove into the distant bunker. On the second hole I aimed toward Sebonak and let the wind bring it back. Which it did way over the hill. I hit a 60 degree way over the green and picked up. On the third the cross wind helped me keep it in the fairway. I hit a blind 7 iron to the green and 4 putted. Didn't have to ring the bell because it was doing it by itself. Liked the hole though. On the Redan I played a 4 iron because of the difficult conditions and did not expect roll off the slope. I sculled two of them and went to the next hole. On the 5th I found that blind bunker over the hogs back got pissed after two tries to get out and carried on to the next. THe 6th was my favorite hole on the course. I am a sucker for something short with interest and this hole has it. I hit the green but five putted with penelty strokes for the ball moving when I went to put. On the next hole having no clue where to hit it I lost my ball in the left rough. I threw a ball in the front bunker just for the fun of it and actually hit a nice sand shot. The next hole I liked other than watching my approach roll off the green back toward me. The ninth did not remind me of a scottish hole so I walked over to the little shack to get out of the weather. Out of nowhere the wind shifted to behind us and I felt like I was in Scotland again. The 10th hole I liked also. The mow line was cool as well as the little back stop behind the green. My first par of the day with the help of the wind. The next one I loved. Any hole that goes over a road is a favorite of mine. Doing my downswing a squirl flew by my head and I took a huge divot. No back to back pars. The 12th I don't remember much. Its that time of the round my ADD kicks it. Enjoyed the much anticipated 13th. THe pin was in that back left flat area. My favorite place for it at NGLA and at TOC. On the next I played a cut that didn't cut over the cape. Another lost ball. On the next I found three bunkers Enough said. I then found my A game. Pulled a nice drive off the tee and over the hill to beside the bunker. With an uphill lie I stiff armed a 6 iron into destiny. Approaching the green I found my ball next to the cup. I love punch bowls. Feathers. With the wind behing me and the windmill hanging on for its life I pulled another drive. It carried the long bunker down the left and left me 80 yards and looking straight at the green..Bladed a perfect wedge to 15 feet. Putted 10 feet past but made the come back. Birdie Par I'm on fire. Now playing with a left to right cross wind and a massive slice the 18th did not look favorable. So I just walked to my car and left. I wanted to leave on a high note. A great day for a golf dork.
