Just some Friday afternoon silliness, as I sit waiting for a client to show up.

Use your power on ONE thing golf related - the game, the Rules, architecture - your choice. Defend your choice wisely.

Please try to be a little more creative than playing Augusta...

Convince (not mandate!) more people at all levels of play -- youth, juniors, high school, college, mid-am, everyone -- to put away their scorecards and pencils and play more match-play golf. This is particularly true on this side of the pond.

Addendum: I think this has the potential for positive developments in areas such as sportsmanship, architecture, and pace of play -- all worthy objectives.

I'd play a dream 54 holes - Pine Valley, Augusta, and Cypress Point (bet i'd be the first one to do that) and make sure I hit a one iron off a tight lie and stuck it close one bounce off the stick (ala Jack Nicklaus at the British Open in the duel in the Sun) to end my day.

Kings Mandate! Diplomats persuade...

Matt takes a swing at Shivas, right out of the box; gutsy.

David, cunning use of your final edict, which might keep you playing a looooooooooooong time. Or maybe not.

Declare that the heads of all golf clubs must be solid all the way through and constructed from only one material - no 2- or 3-ply clubs.

Woo hoo!!   I'm not alone.  For the longest time I was the only one advocating this!!   ;D

Good on your Bruce, I too think that divots should be GUR.

A man after my own heart.

Headin' out shortly, can't say I've decided on my one wish, but I think it will be:

Mandate that all courses cut down their rough for one week. I think thick lush rough is a crutch for poor architecture. I'd like to see how more courses play without that crutch.

I'd make the USGA elite play at a typical municipal course daily for a month to see what golf is like in the real world, and let them see what it's like to play off lies that aren't exactly perfect.

Even better, it'd give them a chance to meet with those who will probably be responsible for growing the game in the future.

Starting at one minute past midnight I would…

Death Penalty for all forms of cheating.

Designers who produce poor courses to be deported to Australia

Raters to also be deported to Antarctica to assess the courses.

R&A dismantled or if possible hung drawn and quartered

PGA to undergo Chinese Communist style re-education procedure in the hope they can understand how to really play golf.

Ground to Air missile system to be installed at all courses promoting the aerial distance game.

Time is now ten minutes past midnight…

Melvyn,

We already have enough dodgy courses in Australia. Send them on to New Zealand.

That’s no disrespect to Australians, I was thinking of letting them go “Walk about" in the great Outback,
enough land not ‘Fit For Purpose’ there to keep the busy for a lifetime. Also lets see some Island Greens out
there too, that is if they do not drink all the water first. With the natural snad traps , cost should be kept down ;)

Remove the penalty that is incurred when, on the green, the ball moves after being addressed.

First off, my apologies if I get some names wrong or misplaced. I think you will get the idea.

Nicklaus Design becomes Lipe and Nicklaus
Love Design becomes Cowley and Love
Weir Design becomes Andrew and Weir
Coore and Crenshaw becomes, well, Coore and Crenshaw
Jacobsen Hardy becomes Hardy and Jacobsen
Brauer Design becomes Begay and Brauer  :P  ;D

after a few warm up shots, I'd let every player hit a drive or two. Then they'd be assigned to the proper tee based on how far the ball carries in the air.

I'd love to roll the ball back for the pros, but I think that would crush many am's, who would cry bloody murder over the loss of even 10% of their "new" distance.

You still have not learnt how to address the ball quietly, the sound waves, as with avalanches assist movement, so address the ball as if it is your Sovereign, then you may master your shot. Windy days do as the old Musselburgh men the gently step upon your ball as you approach it, if it’s an opponent’s ball stamp down more firmly - a practice Musselburgh are well known for and still do to this day.

I'd have Billy Payne and Mike Davis hold a joint press conference--mandatory coverage by the media and mandatory viewing by anyone with one iota's input into any golf course maintenance budget.

I'd have them declare ANGC the poster child for how not to maintain a golf course--unless/until your club holds an annual major tournament.

And I'd want them to use a power point presentation with a lot of graphs and pictures-- explaining things in words small enough for the slower children.

I'd probably insist on Melvyn as moderator.

George - I'd turn off the taps and rip out the irrigation. Wherever grass survived or could be made to survive is where we'd be playing golf -- and no where else. I don't know why this is so hard for some to understand - no one skis in Florida, no one surfs in Idaho, no one plays beach volleyball in the Antarctic, no one plays soccer in Times Square....so why do golfers expect to be able to golf anywhere?!

I would simplify the rules, there are 34 rules in golf but the book is 180 pages.

David,

I have no idea how old you are but many years ago, George Peper, the then Editor of GOLF MAGAZINE, put together something very much like your dream.

Bobby Clampettt was in on the gig which started with a very early round on the Old Course at St. Andrews, a private  jet ride to New York and  eighteen holes at Winged Foot. The same plane then made the transcontinental flight to Monterey with the final twilight round at Pebble
Beach.
