Who "lurks" on GCA?
« on: August 26, 2011, 12:01:37 PM »
There have been quite a few new members of the discussion board over the past few days, and in each introduction they said they had been reading the board for a while before signing up ("lurking" in discussion board speak).

My question is, who do you know that "lurks" here? How widely read is this website throughout the industry? Anyone famous? Have you ever introduced yourself and have someone go "are you the same so-and-so from golfclubatlas.com?" (Much like the famous Pizza Man).

I am by no means famous but I can say truthfully that I have been " lurking " every day on GCA for at least 3-4 years. I found the site interesting and " entertaining"  to say the least. I have mentioned the site to many of my fellow officials, friends, present and past members of the PGA Tour and journalists.Have no idea how many actually have visited but I must have informed 300-400 people as to it's value as a forum covering many topics.

I played with an investment advisor at Bandon Trails that says he plays there four times a week during Nov-Feb. When he got into discussing features of C&C courses around the country, I asked him if he knew of the website, to which responded that he reads it from time to time. I suggested he email Ran and ask for membership as I thought it would be good to have a player on the ground in Bandon as a contributor.

Pat,

I bet Greg Martin whose Master Plan for Wilmette GC was interested in the recent thread you started. I'm sure the amateur architects here whose comments were posted created quite a chuckle.

While playing with a stranger recently, I was asked how me recent trip to Nebraska was. I asked him how he knew I was just there. He said he saw my thread asking for advice about the region.

I have also been to more than one golf course that when I was checking in, was asked if I was planning on doing a photo tour.

From time to time at industry conferences, someone will let me know that they read this site and appreciate my "real world" contributions.  In ten years, no more than two dozen, however.  Most give you a blank look when you mention it.

Gentlemen,

I lurked on GCA for about 18 months before I wrote to Ran and asked if I could make a financial contribution as I got such great entertainment value out of the site. I know I'm Scottish but that's a true story, honestly! Ask Ran! I did not realise that one could become a member and assumed it was a bit of a closed shop so was delighted when invited to join. I must have come over as particularly tragic.

But on topic. I have been surprised at the number here (Queensland, Australia) who do not know of its existence. When I mention the GCA  site I mainly get quizzical looks. I have been proselytizing this forum for nigh on 4 years but don't know of any converts yet which has really surprised me as these folks are avid golfers.

Maybe we are somewhat more than "...a little geeky"

Cheers Colin

Romper Room execs lurk on the Merion, NGLA and now PV threads, looking for new recruits to the day care.

I hear a remake of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is in the making, and several gca.com participants are in the running for the roles of insane asylum patients.

If Trump is watching this, I bet he's taking names and wanting to kick ass!

He Who Must Not Be Named (The Dark Lord) does not need to lurk.

It is my impression that a lot of industry professionals are at least aware of the site, even if they don't habitually lurk or post. Most of the superintendents and architects I talk to know about this thing.

I have had it on good authority that Tom Fazio lurks, or did at one time a few years ago. And I know that Tom Marzolf is well aware of the site, and refuses to view it, because as he told me, "I'm held up there as the poster boy for bad architecture."

What's the matter with you guys?! Man, if you were golf courses you'd all be blueprints! What's with this two-dimensional thinking? Haven't you ever heard about the collective unconscious, about the time-space continuum, about worm holes and anti-matter reactors and warp speed? Don't you realize that these words/posts get here through the internet, as energy packets flying through the ether and bouncing off satellites and dispersing through the cosmos as perfect mathematical formulae? Who is lurking? Who is lurking, you ask? Aliens, of course! And also the so-caled 'ghosts' of Ross and Fowler and Macdonald and Darwin and Wind and even Max Behr and Joshua Crane.  (Oh...and I hope Tiger Woods too, and especially also Jack Nicklaus and Ben Crenshaw - they're my heroes!).  In short, the whole universe is being edified by our wise, pithy and enlightened words.
