Designers of current Top 100 World Golf Courses (living).
« on: August 21, 2011, 11:18:58 PM »
For whatever reason (vanity actually) I just did a tally...and...not including multiples...came up with 23 persons alive today.
Not sure what this means but it would be an interesting get together...very interesting!

What is most interesting is that 57 people would show up.

:)

I will try to reconstruct Paul's 23:

Bill Coore
Ben Crenshaw
Tom Doak
Mike Clayton
Pete Dye
Ron Fream
David Dale - admit it, you didn't think of him [Nine Bridges co-designer]
Jack Nicklaus
Kyle Phillips
Gil Hanse
Mark Parsinen
Davis Love III
David Kidd
Arthur Hills
Tom Weiskopf
Jay Morrish
Jim Urbina
Robert Trent Jones Jr.
Pat Ruddy

That's 19 if you only count the designers named on the list itself.  [Twenty if you let Rees Jones in for getting his name on The Country Club; his brother would vote no.]  Paul must have been counting himself, and I guess Mark Love.  But I'm not sure who #23 is.

It would indeed be an interesting get-together, but  you'd have to hold it outdoors.  There's not an indoor venue big enough to contain all the egos above!  :)

Fazio appears as a glaring omission from your list....

Michael Wharton-Palmer:

Believe it or not, Tom Fazio did not have a single golf course on the latest GOLF Magazine ranking of the top 100 courses in the world.  He has several on their U.S. list.

Jim Kennedy:

David Harman passed away about three years ago, from cancer.

Would #4 - "Nature" - TOC, make the list of the living?  ;D

There are only 8 living guys in the top 50 of the top 100 list. The staying power of the older courses, and their architects, is pretty impressive.

edit: Sorry to hear that about David Harman. Is Philip Mackenzie Ross still alive?

By my count Tom Fazio has both the most courses to make the World Top 100 (12), and the most to no longer be in the wold Top 100 (12).

Don't want to hijack the thread, but we started last week.  I'm headed there Wednesday, and intend to see five or six greens finished before I depart on September 1st.

Paul:

Good luck with that.  As far as I can recall, no course in the top 100 is credited to three designers of record ... partly due to space limitations.  So you may have to wrestle Mark L. for the silver medal!

I wonder if multiple golf course designers is going to be the new trend in golf like it is in Hollywood.

I was watching some TV show the other night and I counted when the credits rolled.  It had 7 Executive Producers and 2 Co-Executive Producers.  It was beyond silly.

Regarding multiple designers, it could certainly be a trend and that's fine. All will accept the accolades as long as things are great. The moment, however, someone takes a Topflight to the skull and the lawsuits start flying, the real architect will be left standing alone and the other two (or three or four) will run for the bushes  saying they only acted as a "design  consultant".

Brian:

Do you mean the real architect, or the one who owns the business?  Or are the two always the same in your mind?  Surely there are some circumstances where it's not so.
