How about the next one!!

Tee shot at the 4th hole at Shennecossett is a pretty daunting shot.

Agreed.  I'd take the tee shot on 9 at Yale over that one anytime!

The tee shots on both par 3s on the back nine--13 and 17--at Pawleys Plantation are crazy-hard.

The approach to the 12th hole at Lexington (VA) CC, my college team's home course, is up there too.

Has anyone said the approach to the 17th at the Road Hole?

Yes, when you mentioned the approach to the ninth at Riviera did you mean the second or third shot?  I can't imagine hitting that green in two.

2nd shot on 16 at Pac Dunes is up there for me. There are plenty of "harder" shots, but if I have a wedge in my hands from 50-90 yards, I expect par or better...and that shot from a really tight fairway lie has bogey or double bogey (if I go long) written all over it.

My next one

Or for those still to play TOC its walking to the 1st Tee and taking that first plunge. Perhaps one of the hardest Holes you will ever encounter may be walking up the 18th Fairway on TOC over The Swilkem Bridge to the Valley of Sin may come a close second.

The hardest shot is not always down the the course, remember golf's final frontier is in the mind.

17 @ Palmetto Dunes (Hills) from the back tee. This one is my nemesis. It is shaped just like my tee shot, which should be a good thing, except there's no room to start it out far enough to the right to be able to run it up the fairway.

The approach shot on #8 at Prairie Dunes - especially if you are unlucky enough to be on a downslope.

With the pin behind the Road Hole Bunker - almost no matter the wind direction and/or your drive - I would also go for the 2nd shot on the 17th hole on TOC. To pull that shot off, you will always need a bit of luck.

No. 2 (par 3) off the tee at Ardglass.  It's not all that long, maybe 170 yds., but uphill, over sea cliffs, and usually against the wind.  (I'm ignoring any number of blind shots that I've faced.)

2nd shot to 11th green TOC having missed the green.

Oddly, the first time I played it, my ball ended up short of the green right next to Gordon Moir's (Links Superintendent) and we were having a match for a beer.

He putted his and it went past the hole about a foot.

I hit a little pitch with an L wedge that also went about a foot past the hole.

There was a wee breeze blowing and his rolled back into the hole for a deuce, while mine only rolled back about 6 inches, leaving me a 6-inch par putt. He and the Head Greenkeeper clipped us 4 and 3 for the beer, and it was well worth the cost.

Back on topic I figure the hardest shot I've seen on a course of reknown is the second at Foxy on Royal Dornoch--with a left hole location.  I still can't figure out how someone would get on there in regulation.

I agree with Lester. The tee shot on the par three fifth hole at Pine Valley, perhaps exceeded only by the second shot, in my experience.

#6 @ Kingsley Club

+1.  I have hit some nice conservative 3woods and 3 irons off the tee- placed 'em nicely on the middle left side of the fairway and then ralphed all over myself for an X on the scorecard and scurried to the 17 tee box.  It's offically PTSD for me on the second shot at #16.

While at Bandon, I also knee knock it on the #5 tee at OM.  I have played there 6 times and only hit the green once.  My last time there was so bad I cold shanked it 40 yards into the gunch- lost ball- two more tries and then picking up. This hole is in my head, because on 6 I nutted a blind 3 iron over the hell bunker to get to the green in two and had an easy birdie.  You would think 6 is harder than 5, just goes to show the great design of 5 and how bad it gets in my head.

The second shots on the par threes at Rye...

On that vein, the second shot if you miss the green at 5 RM West.

You guys are WAY off... :)

The hardest shots I've ever seen or heard about are at The Golf Club of Georgia Creekside course...

Take your pick on the 5th hole, the tee shot, second shot, or approach/third shot.

http://www.golfclubofgeorgia.com/creekside_5.html

MY GOD!!!  Perhaps the worst hole in the history of golf and the hardest shots as well.   :o

And let's not sleep on the 8th hole either...specifically the approach shot.
