...under My Home Course.

After reading his commentary and seeing the photos, it sure makes me want to grab the clubs and head for a game there.

Of course, might be a little chilly this time of year  :) but still, what an IMPRESSIVE course profile.

Cheers,

Anyone unfamiliar with what some of us are talking about when we claim an appreciation for "natural" design, as well as integration of golf features with the surroundings should have a LONG look at those pictures.

Great writeup, Dick.

The thing that impressed me most while reading the hole descriptions was how it sounds like the holes play well in multiple wind conditions. Nice to hear Josh Mahar keeps it firm & fast, too.

Warning: The following reflects this member's aestethic preferences and does also reflect his views, not simply his debating style. :)

I really do like the look of the course, but what I REALLY like is the open nature, totally treeless with wide expansive views. And not just cause I hit the ball all over the place. I personally prefer being able to see other golfers, as opposed to many others, who seem to like isolation. To each his own.

P.S. Any way someone could post an overhead graphic of the layout? If there is one thing I would like to see more on this site, it would be graphic representation of both courses & individual holes. I don't know about anyone else, but I enjoyed the sketches in the old books like Golf Architecture in America & The Course Beautiful, as well as those in newer books like Geoff Shackleford's The Captain, as much as photographs & find them to be very helpful in discussing architectural features.

INCREDIBLY cool.  Well done, Dick.  What shines through for me is your love for a great place.  Some day....

This gets put up... and more pics of Pennard... it just hits me again what a freakin' GREAT sport golf is.  I was made to justify my interest in it this weekend in the marital wars, and while this gives me no "ammo", it does renew my vigor.  Muchas gracias to Dick, Paul and Ran!

Mr. Daley,
Awesome write up!! I've heard Dave and Dan talk about the WH many times, but it's never really promoted except here, on GCA. I think that "Links" should have it be a "Modern Classic" soon!! It's much more GCA's style than The Sanctuary.

Wow Dick, what a write-up!  This has really got my interest peaked here.  What are the greens fees, are there somewhat decent places to stay in the area, and how far is it from the nearest airport with service from the west coast?

George,
While I was collecting aerials off of mapquest.com of great courses, I thought of Wild Horse and looked for it.  However, the pic of the area where Wild Horse now sits was taken before it was built and can be found here:

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?zoom=8&mapdata=hP0urGiog%2be9RV516c6f3FiBKjRay0AfAyb5KJ9yZfsh3TVwz833x25URMMQf6Qu2qhJvatA%2bzhWd1r3%2bwqKnVKGzjZaTIr4IltJPn

G3SFmgJHlU2gSE%2bOmm%2fWI6h4qIRiVk7KwMW9PWzc7oo%3d

I'm pretty sure it's the big area to the left of the big crop circle and above the creek.

I have a question/concern for Dick Daley, are they really building homes around the course?  That, as the saying goes, seems like painting a moustache on....you know the drill.

Edit:  I don't know how this got bolded.  According to the Help link, you need [\b] around your text, but I don't have any.

Hello GCAer's,

I must say first that without Tommy Naccarato's helping to get the pictrures in a proper file size, none would have been posted.  Thanks Tommy!  Also, since I can go on almost as long as Tom Paul when writing about my favorite subject, WH, my article was improved by Ran having to edit alot of surplusage in my original writing.  Unlike a trained writer, I don't know when or how to stop... :-/   I have a couple hundred pictures of Wild Horse and poor Ran got some 40 submitted with the article, which would have caused that window in "my home course" to take about a week to open, if all of them were inserted in the article.

So, if anyone wants to see a pic or two in an e-mail, and/or of any particular hole, , contact me and I'll try to send some pics not posted here in this article.

Mike, the course is in Gothenburg NE, about 30 miles east of North Platte that has commuter flights daily.  Or, it is 2.5 hours west of Lincoln, 3 west of Omaha airports and 4 hours from Denver.  Really, the only place in Gothenburg to stay is Super 8.  North Platte has a dozen or more good places to stay and eat because it is western NE's convention center.  Green fees were $32-36 last season, I don't know what they'll be next season.  It is the best of walking courses, but they do have carts too...

Scott, your concerns are well founded.  The only way a community effort like Wild Horse was going to fly is if they had some lot sales.  There are 54 lots all sold out that surround the course.  To date about a dozen homes have been built.  There are no ostintatious mansions, just nice middle class housing.  There will be no homes within the boundries of the course, but in the end, roof lines will compromise the distant long sand hill prairie views.   :(

I hope we can put together a GCA group get-to-gether out there next fall.  There are other courses of interest in the area that we can work into the mix for variety.

Must we stay at the Super 8 or can we just pitch our tents on your lot hard by the 2d hole?  ;D

So much golf, so little time...

P.S. Great article--well done!

Doug,

I've got a pop-up camper we could set up on Dick's property...and it sleeps six pretty comfortably.  Plus, it's only about a ten hour drive from my house.

Do I hear "road trip" / GCA outing?  ;D  :P  8)

Evan,

It's only 4 hours for me. We can call it "Golfapalooza 2002," bring in Alice Cooper, Celine Dion, Kenny G and the rest of the Calloway enter-golfers for entertainment, and golf and party to out hearts' content. I'm sure Dick won't mind.  ;D

You better not drive to Oregon with that bumper sticker, or you prompt someone to come back with a strong retort. :)

George,

We have no quarrel with the Ducks. Too bad they couldn't play the 'Canes, though I think I know the outcome. You gotta understand--The Husker Nation is relentless in its arrogant abuse of CU, and this well deserved payback was a long time coming.

All the same, I won't be wearing my black and gold CU golf sweater when I visit Bandon this year...

Dave Wilber:

I like that little quote on your post that nobody can putt in soup. I can hit second shots into soup though. When I was young at the old Links Club (Raynor NLE) I hooked my second shot on a hole right through the kitchen window into a big pot of soup in the kitchen. Lunch at the Links's old farmhouse clubhouse was a big deal and paying for the window wasn't so bad but I was not popular for wiping out the soup. I know golf can be dangerous but that's the only time I ever heard of a golf shot effecting the menu.

Fabulous write up. The course looks to be world class and a must see. How does the terrain differ from Sand Hills? The clubhouse sitting on top of that hill has an almost Shinnecock-esque look. I have heard it plays even faster and firmer than SH, any thoughts?

Tom Paul,
Are you sure you're not confusing yourself with Otter from Animal House?  He hooked one into the soup in the kitchen.  Maybe you were in a "haze" when you first saw the movie and it now comes back to you as "real"  ;) .

Side note:  Animal House was filmed on the campus of the above mentioned U of Oregon.  On my way back from Bandon Dunes in 1999, I drove by the location of where the Delta House once sat, which is next to where (what was used as the) Omega House still sits.  I figured if I was driving through Eugene, I had to check out at least one Animal House location and perennial top 100 (and reversed) course Eugene CC.

Tom Mac., the terrain is understated or less dramatic at WH than SH.  SH has the quality of real isolation.  With homes and farms within view, WH can not match that.  I would repeat that WH is on the edge of the sand hills territory and therefore reflects some prairie aspects and some true sand hills flavor.  The aspect of comparing fast and firm conditions of course has something to do with weather and amount of rain as well as actual irrigation regime.  The fairways at SH are fescue mixes and WH has blue fairways with fescue surrounds.  The really great thing about WH is that the super, (Josh) has maintained the blue fairways on the sand soil in excellent firm and fast conditions consistently, whenever the weather has not over-ruled him.
