Cobble Beach Golf Links (Canada) w/pics - All 18 posted New
« on: August 18, 2011, 12:31:34 AM »
Unique in Ontario and Canada, Cobble Beach occupies some prime lakefront property. The land slopes fairly substantially from west to east and towards the lake providing great views of Georgian Bay. Although most will be amazed by the lakeside holes, a couple of which are stunners, I think it is important to note that the holes away from the water are just as strong and in some places stronger than those hard up against the water.

Frank,

I only know of two others on this board who have seen the course.
The discussion might be limited.

It's one of my favourites of Doug's work.
The feeder slopes on the 8th and 13th are some of the best he has done.

The lumpy fairways were created - an interesting idea to say the least.
This course was a bit of a step outside the box for him which was great to see.

Frank - thanks for posting it.  I've never played a Carrick course, despite my Ontario upbringing.

I was told that his courses are quite playable, and that is the impression I get from the photos.

I've played it. Frank, I share your sentiments about the comparison to Eagle's Nest. (Which I had the fortune to play this week for a second time -- I should say I enjoyed it more this time around, in part because I played well enough to pay closer attention.)

I don't recall Cobble being too soft when I was there but then it was a few years ago now. The main complaint I had was about the ponds, which are probably practically placed but really felt out of the subtle aesthetic character you noted. I really did enjoy the windy conditions, elevation change and views, though. I recall coming off the course sunburned, windblown and happy.

I realize this was likely out of the architect's control but I'm not a fan of the corny fake lighthouse on 17. Too bad it's the main attraction in all the marketing literature.

Ian: it is funny you mention the step outside the box as I also noted this on my blog. For me, this course represented a "new" Carrick, which I enjoyed very much.

Ian,

You'll have to increase that to three.  I too was there once a few years ago.

Interesting that the humpy fairways were created, although I guess not too surprising since they are out of context with the surrounding land.  The downhill par 5, the 7th, I thought provided a great example of Kirk's theorem.  I guess that meant it was firm and fast the day I was there. I suspect that if it wet this year, it is because they've probably been pouring on the water given how hot and dry it's been.

Frank, I don't think I would rate it higher than Eagles Nest.  Or, vice versa.  They both have their merits. They are both above average courses in the top 100 in Canada.  It's certainly better than King Valley that score ranks higher.  Too bad CBGL is so far from Toronto.

I wonder how they are doing economically - it's so far from any major market.

Now, if Mike Keiser had had his hand in the development of it, it might be more widely recognized.  And, its location would be irrelevant.  ;)

Bryan, I agree. I would not rate Cobble higher than Eagles, although I believe there is potential.

Overall I find Cobble more to my personal liking when all is considered.

I'd argue that the back nine at Cobble lets the course down -- the 10th is terrific, but there are a lot of pond holes on the back nine that really seem artificial. I'm not crazy about 17 either, though I do like the short four.

I don't think it holds together nearly as well as Eagles Nest, which really doesn't have a poor hole, even if I'm not a fan of the 18th.

Haven't played Cobble Beach, but I think it looks great in pics.  I'd be curious to know where the name came from.  Is there a beach adjacent to the property called Cobble Beach?

My take on Carrick is mixed.  He creates wonderful courses out of uninteresting land, which has to be the mark of a talented architect.  The Osprey courses are top notch, but I think he also has a tendency to over do it at times with efforts like Eagles Nest, Bigwin & Muskoka Bay.

Henry: Maybe Eagles Nest is a bit overdone, but what Doug made of the property that was there is undoubtedly interesting and pretty amazing.
