Spring/Summer 2012 Trip
« on: August 13, 2011, 12:20:08 AM »
Seeing all the great pictures of places like Ballyneal and Dismal River have given me a thought on something I would like to do try and do. If any GCAer's want to try and be along for part of the ride let me know.

My thought is make the drive from Houston and play golf all the way up to Nebraska. I want to stop and play along the way in Oklahoma, Kansas, and all the way into the Sand Hills. I was thinking about making it about a 10 day trip, is this to much golf and driving or is it a cool way to spend some vacation time?

Sam,

As someone who recently completed a trip with a heck of a lot of driving and golf (that included DR and BN), the only advice I would give is to ensure that you have at least 2 days at both of those courses.  And from what I hear, ditto if you are planning on stopping at Prairie Dunes.  This may make a 10 day schedule a bit tight.  Of course, you could just do what I did and add days!

It is certainly a cool way to spend some vacation time.

Mark, your photo threads are great.  Could you summarize your trip in one thread, comparing/contrasting/recommending/etc?

Sam, I love your idea.  Let me recommend you go play Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club on the drive up.  It's the first course mackenzie and Maxwell did together and it's terrific.

I'm thinking of a similar trip only starting in Michigan and making stops in Chicago, Omaha, on the way out and Minnesota and Wisconsin on the way back.

All of which is predicated on the approval of She Who Must Be Obeyed.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

Better ply her with some Chateau Thames Embankment!

It is likewise hot here in the Queen City, so I think that could be affecting our mindset.

I would definitely 2nd the recommendations for more than 1 day at Prairie Dunes, and stopping at Oklahoma City GCC for a game on the way up to PD.

The latter was a shocker, in a good sense....and a decent primer for the Maxwell that you'll see a few miles up the road.
You'd make a fine little helper. What's your name?

couldn't do anything that long but could host a day as you drive up and maybe fly in once or twice. It is hard to fly to that part of the world for those of us without a plane.

Sam,
It's not a bad drive  ;)
Stops at DH, PD, & WH help to break it up.
Find somewhere to stop in DFW and you've got a nicely spaced golf road trip.
Then you get to the Sand Hills

I'm going to sleep on Beene's couch and maybe clog up his toilet.

I used to have a G3 but that was before 2008 - or so Tom Renli said.

couch? You and any of your tag alone travelers get the run of the upstairs including the putting green and numerous sets of irons and putters( which I move around the house so Elizabeth can't count them). You need to come to Lakewood so you can see our lack of common sense spending a fortune to redo the target areas on the driving range as the economy tumbles.
