To be fair, that picture of the green complex at Burnt Pine reminds me of the strings of bunkers at Mid Ocean Club, which is a Macdonald/Raynor course and therefore respected here on GCA.  Just sayin'.

I've played Duke a few times and liked it enough; the par fives are quite good.  Bryan Park (Champions) outside of Greensboro is fine, with a couple very nice holes on the back nine.  Currituck was, I thought, exceedingly forgettable, with some thunderously mediocre and unimaginative holes along the marsh on the front nine.  I haven't made it to Lake of Isles but would like to at some point.  My father has played Haig Point and Briar's Creek and spoken highly of both.  Two Rees courses (Belle Terre and Wild Wing--Falcon) are among the NLEs on the Grand Strand the last ten years or so; they're not too sorely missed.

I expect that Currituck, despite being on the Outer Banks and full of wild potential, will be prim and proper as a blue-blood school girl's appearance. I hope that I'm wrong.

You'll know after the first hole.

I have a limited experience with his work, but I will say that he didn't seem to have any bad holes. The worst i would say about them would be either repetitive, or simply boring.

Then again, really inspired work often comes from taking chances and I don't see a lot of that in Rees' work, either that I've played or looked at in pictures here.

I thought Baker Hill in New Hampshire was very good. It's a relatively newish private Rees Jones course that was built at about the same time as Old Kinderhook.

Pat,

I have never played the hole, but that has to be the worst looking picture of a golf hole I have ever seen.

Tim,

I'm not smart enough to be able to judge a golf hole from an angled aerial, so, I can't comment on the quality of the picture or the golf hole.

I'll only echo what Kyle Harris stated, you don't play or judge a golf hole/course from aerials.

You know NGLA far better than I do, but I'll bet you can't present a picture of NGLA that looks half that bad.

I think it depends on your perspective.

If you go to "google earth" and zero in on some of the bunkering at NGLA you'll find ovular, circular and symetrical bunkers.

The bunker/s in the picture may look and function quite different from the golfer's perspective, versus a pilot's perspective.

I'd rather play the hole prior to making a judgement.

And, of course, a golf hole isn't played from 5,000 feet, but I'm wondering why someone would make that point rather than describe what is good about the hole.

Probably because he hasn't played it, and neither have I, so we couldn't render a judgement based on experience.

Admit it, it looks awful, but if it is interesting to play, ok, let's hear about it.

I don't think it looks awful.
And I'm not willing to condemn, neither the look or playability of the hole until after I've experienced it.

But, that's just me. others may disagree

Pat--
Pretty sure that oval was the adjective you were looking for there!

I used to play at Eagle Lodge in Philadelphia, which was bought by ACE Group Insurance and plowed under for the Gary Player designed ACE Club. The course was used for many years for the Philly PGA. I liked the way it changed from the whites to the blues. Not just added yardage but tees with very different angles, forcing you to play draws and fades to keep it in the fairway. If a fairway sloped from right to left you could assume that the back tee was further right, landing your ball on the downside of the slopes. The greens had multiple levels to ensure that hitting the center of every green was not a good idea. I now play at a course of his at Woodside Plantation in Aiken, S.C. There are some similarities in that the greens have enough areas to hide a pin that you often need to shoot at pins or face the probability of some 3 putts. A lot of doglegs so you need to be able to move your ball both ways. Both courses have severe elevation changes and he handles them pretty well. Fairway bunkers are to be avoided. Greenside ones are standard. The courses do not scream out greatness but are solid. A good golfer can shoot a good score if he is playing well, but an off day will lead to some real struggles, but fair ones. Overall I like his teeing strategies, penalizing the one dimensional player, and I like the way his greens look large, but are really 2 or 3 small greens that are connected, and you need to be on the right one.

Tom - great point about Eagle Lodge - I forgot all about it.  Agree with you - it was a really nice golf course.
