I don't know that I have to be saying that.  I think Pacific Dunes and OM are very good, Bandon OK and Trails average.

Trails average?  I just got back and if anything it's even better than I thought previously.  It's not even close Jim, Bandon crushes Pebble in terms of golf and value.  In addition, the food's better than it used to be... 8)

love Trails!

I'll ask an earlier question again; Does Bandon, Pebble or Myrtle Beach offer unlimited golf to local residents for $300 a year?

Why would they?

Because public golf means affordable access to all.

I do not agree with that definition.

The title of thread is "destination", not place to live for public golf ... I will agree with Greg on this one (as usual), affordable is not part of the equation, public access is the defining character.

A for those that suggest St Andrews, access to TOC is not all that simple or guaranteed, Pebble may be easier ...

Lots of places have great golf, but how many can guarantee:

- no matter when you come, you will play in decent weather at least 2 out of 3 days and
- on that other day there are many interesting things to do indoors.

This is where most of the places mentioned in this thread suffer.

In fact right now I am sitting in Pertisau, Austria, next to a pretty good golf course and I am rained out. As you can see I am passing my time on the Internet :)

Sorry folks but Spyglass is better than three of the four courses at Bandon.  Also, you can take a cart with all of Monterey's public courses which makes them more accessable.

Tim,

You're right to call out Spyglass' greatness.  Pebble is a world-class golf course and Spyglass isn't far behind.  The first five holes are simply awe inspiring and the rest of the golf course is terrific.  It surely lacks the drama of the seaside holes and maybe it suffers by comparison as a result, but individually each hole is great.  I'm not sure that I'd go as far as you and say that Spyglass is better than three of the Bandon courses, but it's better than one and pretty equal to another, in my opinion.

To me there is one major difference between the two resorts that ensures that Bandon is a far superior resort, and that is the absence of carts at Bandon and the overabundance of cart golfers who would ONLY play Pebble if they had a cart.  You get a different type of golfer, number one.  But you also get an entirely different vibe on the resort.  There's a lot more adventure, sport and exercise at Bandon.  You're doing something that is pretty much against "type" at any other resort in America, by playing links golf and walking with a caddie.  I have seen some really horrific golfers riding carts and playing Pebble and the other courses there on the resort.  I once got hooked up with a guy who was by himself, but had his wife on the cart with him (paid for the "privilege") and he shot around 150, with the wife constantly barking instructions from the cart.  That just doesn't happen at Bandon.  I'm sure they get groups that play one day and say "forget it" because the walk is too arduous, the holes too quirky or the wind too strong, but anybody who stays and plays three or four days is the kind of golfer that I like to meet, not somebody who knows full well that he couldn't walk the course if he had to.

And then, of course, there's Carmel.  There ain't no Carmel near the Bandon resort.  For playing 18 holes and grabbing dinner off the resort, Pebble is really hard to top.  But I digress...

I'm still waiting to hear the why and which ones that  Spyglass is better than at Bandon Resort.

If we're talking 5 holes courses, then maybe I can see that...but its 18 holes last I checked!  ;)

I like it better than the original Bandon course, and I think it's right up there with Trails.  Just because the routing demanded that the ocean holes were done after the fifth hole doesn't mean that the rest of the holes aren't great.  If one took that logic, Trails wouldn't be much of a course at all, because holes 3-13 wend through the forest and away from the dunes.

Not accurate. Peak rates are 275 vs. 360. Even my West Virginia math can't get 60% from these.

ok. 30.9% for non-resort guests...I'd only play Spyglass over Bandon Dunes, and I certainly wouldn't pay $360 (again) for the privilege.

Should weather, or the gurantee of, factor into the value aspect?

It depends how you calculate it.

Resort guests get a discount at Bandon, but they do not at Spyglass.  Rounds are only $225 at Bandon when staying in thier properties.

So 360-225=135... 135/225 = 60% more expensive when staying at the resort.

Not sure how to figure cost into this top public destination question but if you look at peak non resort guest at Bandon you have to add the additional cart fee ($50ish I think) at Spyglass for non resort guests and it goes back to over 60%.  I assume the cart or caddie is mandatory at Spy during prime time.

Joe,

Not only that, but the rates at Pebble Beach resort are unchanging year round.

We comparing rates in non-peak season.... while Pebbles remain the same, Bandon gets ALOT cheaper!!

Throw in the $100 for the caddie and you are back down to maybe 12%

Greg,

Cabo is ideal weatherwise.  2 problems.  1- It ain't cheap.  2. It's hard to justify a guy's golf trip sans wives to Cabo.

    2. Hilton Head
    3. Bandon
    4. Cabo
    5. St. Andrews

C. Weather / Playable Days
    1. Cabo
    2. Hilton Head
    3. Monterey
    4. St. Andrews
    5. Bandon

D. Relative Value
    1. St. Andrews
    2. Hilton Head
    3. Bandon
    4. Cabo
    5. Monterey

It is not as expensive as Bandon if you are paying the $400 per night for accommodations.

You can get a very nice hotel here now for $150 per night.

#2 is a killer.

OK - cut the hotel expense for Cabo in half if you are sharing.
