Dan - What were your thoughts on TCC vs Myopia? I played TCC a couple of years ago and will be visiting Myopia next season. Curious to hear your thoughts.

I love both. But I would give Myopia the edge, just because I love the look of it. More intimate setting. Ironically, given that TCC is a major championship site, I think Myopia is a tougher course if you aren't playing well. As far as inland courses go, they would be my top 2, along with Alwoodley in the UK. I should get another play at Myopia this fall, and with foliage changing it'll probably jump to the top of my list, which admittedly has nothing to do with architectural merit and everything to do with ambiance and aesthetics.

I’ve had a very lucky run of late. That’s not my typical “last 10.”

Ledges I’ve played a few times. In my head, I think of it as a difficult course even though the scores I’ve posted there have always been good. Seems like I play my best when I’m there.

But my most recent play, which was maybe two weeks ago, had me appreciating the course more. I don’t like the 18th. It is one of many top New England public courses that have crappy finishing holes. (I’d include Red Tail, Blackstone National, and the Ranch in that category … all with weak final holes.)

Other than that, I don’t love the 10th hole only because OB is really tight on the right side, which makes it more penal than it should be on a dogleg right. But the rest of it is really enjoyable, and more forgiving than I originally gave it credit for.  It’s climbed up a few spots on my list of favorite publics in New England.

After not seeing many new courses this year, I had a nice trip to England a couple of weeks ago.

Wallasey
Royal Liverpool
Formby
Royal Lytham & St. Anne's
Southport & Ainsdale
Hillside
West Lancashire
Formby Ladies
Pleasington
Royal Birkdale

The quality of golf in this roughly 40 mile stretch is astounding to me.  It was a somewhat last minute trip, planned when I wasn't able to make it to upper Michigan with my regular group, and I am so glad it worked out.

The more links golf I play, the more links golf I want to play.
New for '24: Monifieth x2, Montrose x2, Panmure, Carnoustie x3, Scotscraig, Kingsbarns, Elie, Dumbarnie, Lundin, Belvedere, The Loop x2, Forest Dunes, Arcadia Bluffs x2, Kapalua Plantation, Windsong Farm, Minikahda...

How was Pleasington, Brian?  It’s in tough company on that list!  I used to be a member there and have fond memories but heard a few years ago that the condition had really gone down hill.

I really enjoyed Pleasington.  As you well know, there is some nice land for golf there, with plenty of elevation change, as well as some gentler rolls.  I found the conditions to be good.  The greens rolled true and fairways were generally pretty firm with solid grass coverage in all but a few spots (mainly under large, old trees - always a tough spot to grow grass).  Some tree thinning / trimming might really benefit the turf in places, and open up a couple of holes that felt a bit tight.  I don't know what the general expectation was there, in terms of conditions, but I had no issues at all.  They are doing work on 7-8-9, although I am unsure of what exactly.  I'd gladly return.

I haven't played it but I'll continue the military course trend.

I won't list my last 10 but the last course I played is a course I would guess not a single person on the site has played.  Figure less than a couple hundred have played it.  Interestingly it has kind of been mentioned on the site by John Kirk in a thread about golf on a tropical island (Diego Garcia (golfclubatlas.com)).  The picture in the linked article is not the location of the actual golf course.

The fifth hole is kind of a dell (definitely a stretch as they're just mounds hiding the "green").
From the "tee" you can see the flat top Mount Dundas (where the flag was planted in the linked article in the above linked thread) and in front of the mountain you can see the mounds protecting the "green":

The dell "green" site pictured below from the 6th "tee".  All but one of the flags has been blown off the flagstick (200+ mph winds were recorded in the 70's).

I played the lesser of the 2 courses at Redstone Arsenal because they were having some sort of tournament on the Patriot Course. The Warrior course is quite flat and really boring.

Mossy Oak was OK, I kind of expected more to be honest. I wouldn't go out of your way to play it, but if nearby, worth a play at off season rates ($85).
