Tom,

It's fully deserving and I believe I would tell the designer why in person unflinchingly.

Bogey,

Yes...sadly the greens on the Banks were closed due some winter kill.  I did salivate passing by some of those holes.

Sean,

You may want to work on a cross reference table and yes I've been playing some really poor architecture as of late.  But...it's golf and I'll enjoy the good and great ones all the better.

Would Ballyhack be ranked higher if you didn't need a cart?

GL -

Good question. I usually take off a point if it's a borderline rating and carts are required. Ballyhack is a special case because the terrain that makes carts a necessity makes the course so uniquely exciting and fun and beautiful, and also because Lester did a great job of minimizing walks between holes. It would be hard to consider the course in the abstract without that extreme terrain and the need to carry chasms like on 1, 11, and 17 and then take carts around them. But the short answer is that I did not deduct a point here because carts are necessary.

Good stuff, JB.  Thanks for the insight.  I'm originally from Roanoke and playing in September for the first time.  Looking forward to it!

You're going to love it, GL. I spent about five years in the Valley of Virginia, and greatly anticipated playing Ballyhack for about a year and a half after reading Ran's profile. To see such a bold, strategic golf course on the landscape I love was a dream come true, and it lived up to or exceeded my expectations in every way. The George Cup is a really fun event with a great group of guys, too.

I hope I started a trend by applying my own Doak Scale ratings and it's good to see others opinions. I particularly enjoyed seeing Jason's 6 for Texas Star which I'm in agreement with.

I hope Tom doesn't mind.

Mike:

I don't mind a bit.  In fact, I wish more people would do this.  It provides some real information to the thread, instead of just showing off where someone has been; and it also provides some real information about the reporter, and whether I should trust his or her ratings in the future.  :)

Unfortunately, you seem to have jinxed it, as no one has posted any 0-10 ratings since your post.  So, I will start, with a report from my trip last week [the last one for Volume 2 of The Confidential Guide].  Note that I did not play all of these courses, as there was a LOT of rain in the area last week:

Camargo Club - 7 or 8, I still have a year to decide this one
Diamante, AR - 5
Hot Springs (Arlington) - 6
Hot Springs (Park) - 4
Texarkana - 5
Cedar Ridge, OK - 4
Hillcrest CC, Bartlesville, OK - 5
Karsten Creek - 7
Twin Hills, OKC - 5
Oklahoma City G & CC - 6

Tom,

Thanks, and you may note that I have since played Willie Park's Berkshire in Reading, PA for a second time this past weekend and have revised my score upwards to a 6.

Joe Bausch started a photo thread on our visit yesterday.   It's arguably the biggest surprise in the Philadelphia area where I've lived for the past 30 years.   Until this year I never played there and we were blown away.   The scary part is that with some additional tree removal and a return to some of the wild original bunkering schemes it could get even better.

Tom (or anyone else), care to explain the "Doak Scale" to a newbie?
