Wonderful March trip to So Carolina with three days at Chechessee and one at Yeamans!!

I love Chechessee more every time I go.  It is so well conceived and executed. The angles on every hole are fascinating, and so are the greens.

Springdale Golf Club (Princeton, NJ)   HOME CLUB
Pine Valley (PV - NJ )
Alamance G C (Burlington, NC)
Longaberger  (Newark, Ohio)
Merion G C - East (Ardmore, PA)
Westchester C C – West Course (Rye,NY) ,
Westchester C C – South Course  (Rye, NY),
TC at Yale (New Haven,CT)
Chechessee Creek Club (Okatie, SC)
Yeamans Hall Golf Club   (Hanahan, SC)

Well - it was a pretty good fall, too.

Been a long time since my last post.  Life gets in the way sometimes, but at least there is golf to balance it out...here is my Last Ten:

Walden Ponds (Hamilton, Ohio)
Blue Ash (Blue Ash, Ohio)
Stonelick Hills (Batavia, Ohio)
Cog Hill #4 (Chicago, Illinois)
Island Hills (Centreville, Michigan)
Pilgrim's Run (Pierson, Michigan)
Angels Crossing (Vicksburg, Michigan)
Hawkshead Links (South Haven, Michigan)
Hidden Valley (Lawrenceburg, Indiana)
The Ocean Course-Kiawah (Kiawah Island, South Carolina)

*Cog Hill #4 I found to be overrated.  Bunkering is phenomenal, no question there, but there are several weak holes & way overpriced.
*Pilgrim's Run is a gem.  I don't think I've played a better course for the price & architectural value.  My first Mike Devries course, won't be the last.
*My 2nd time on the Ocean Course.  Difficulty level is off the charts if the wind blows 20+mph; probably the last time I'll play there.

If my selection of golf courses is like investing in the stock market, looks like I'm into the dividend yielding, stable choices and not as speculative as I'd like.   I was blown away by Seminole.  Truly one of golf's hallowed grounds.

The Concession
Seminole
Briggs Ranch
San Antonio CC
Brackenridge Park
Long Cove
Chechessee
May River
Harbour Town
Melrose @ Daufuskie Island

Mac:

Seminole is like a symphony of dunes, wind, routing, and maintenance meld.  The interaction between the course and the dunes is stunning, and I'm not sure it would be possible to route a better course on the property.  I'd only seen the course by google earth and the few photos available, and the amount of movement in the property is much more than I expected.  At 6800, I expected it to play short, but I hit every club in the bag, from a 9 iron to a par 5, to a hybrid to a par 4.  And the finishing stretch of 16-18?  It rivals any finishing stretch I've played.  And I loved the look and play of the turf - perfect conditions, bouncy, and not concerned that it be perfectly green.

Is there a better post-round drink than the Southside at Seminole?

The Concession is an exacting course, and fitting for a NCAA Championship.  Although not overly long (we did not play the tees all the way back), the green complexes were such that short-sided or wrong-sided misses were often hard to recover from, and I made more doubles than in quite a while despite decent ball striking.  But a beatifully presented course.   Of post-Sebonack JN courses I've seen in the past 6 mo, I prefer May River by a nose.

Jim,

Great descriptions!!

I agree Seminole is excellent and I think Ross seems to have gotten a heck of a lot out of that property.

The Concession is a course I like and I think you've captured the essence of it.

Open but quite slow.  They've done a lot of work over the past year or so, and when I was there late last summer the hotel was getting ready to open - new logo and all.   The clubhouse was beautiful, and we were picked up in a new Benz shuttle from the dock, so I'm assuming they have big plans, or the owner has a deep wallet.  The trip over was easy with a new speedboat shuttle.  We played a late summer evening and the course was empty, but well-maintained.   The green on the 18th, the par 5 on the water, had eroded into the sound, so the green was a temp and I think was eventually to be permanently moved away from the water.  Makes for a pretty sweet 36 hole day to play Harbour Town in the AM, quick lunch near the lighthouse, speedboat over to DI, play a quick 18 at Melrose, and beers at the dockside bar while the shuttle comes back to pick you up.

Here's an interesting list of ten ... due to book "research" and a grand opening trip:

Crystal Downs
La Cana, Dominican Republic
Corales, D.R.
Royal Isabela, Puerto Rico
Tara Iti, N.Z. [4.5 rounds]
Waverley, N.Z.
Marton, N.Z.
Palmetto GC, S.C.
Pueblo Nativo, Argentina
Mar del Plata, Argentina

Almost every number from a 10 to a 4 covered in there, but every one of those rounds was a lot of fun.  I've actually played 25 rounds of golf this year, and it's only the middle of May ... and only one out of 25 was at home!

I do enjoy Sean's rating scale but if I applied the same I'd likely hyper-ventilate given some of the courses I've played lately.  ;)

Instead, I'll use the Doak Scale and try to assign numbers accordingly;

Cavaliers (DE) - 2
West Chester (PA) 9 holes - 4
Indian Mountain (PA) 9 holes - 2
Fiddlers Elbow (Forest) (NJ) - 3
Forsgate (Palmer) (NJ) - 1
Old York (NJ) - 0
Burlington NJ) - 3
Kennett Square (PA) - 5
Berkshire (PA) - 6
Tioga (NY) - 1
