Evesham - typical awful course with one awesome hole!
Which hole at Evesham, Sean?
Played it yesterday and one of the holes was probably the worst I've ever played. Interested if we're talking about the same hole.
Ryan
It was the short par 4 after the river hole, #6 I think.
Ciao
Sean
After the river hole is a short par 3.
7th/16th is the hole you mean I think.
Huge slope from left to right. Small green cut into the hill side. We are diametrically opposed in our tastes. The hole will be all I remember of the course it was truly one of the worst holes I've played. Nothing tee shot, that finishes in the same place no matter where you hit it. Followed by a shot up to a tiny green that repels the approach. Really didn't like it.

Thanks for clarifying as I was curious too. I initially assumed it would be the 5th/14th, the rather nice/tough River Hole. The 6th is a kinda awkward hole - plays two ways - as an uphill par-4 of about 320 yds and as a more level par-3 of about 160 yds (not sure of precise distances). As I recall the hole plays on a quite severe side-slope and you have to hit either over or between or around two huge trees to a pretty devilish green.

The 7th/15th is the hole on the really severe side slope. Not a good hole at all, quite the opposite. On one occasion, in a drought, my ball landed on the front-right corner of the green and rolled down onto the 5th/14th tee which must 50-60 yds below the green.

You wouldn't describe Evesham as top golf, 5th/14th and 6th/15th are testing and some of the other holes are okay. Even though it's normally, flooding periods apart, in good nick it wouldn't get many points on a Doak scale. Still it's golf.

Yes, the 6th or 15th.  I prefer the short 4, but the par 3 version of the hole is quite good.  For the short 4 its one of the best uses of trees I am experienced with.  For the record, not all drives finish up in the same place. A very good drive will finish on the green.  A very poor drive will not be seen again.

I'm pleased to say we aren't discussing the same hole. I'm referring to 7/16.

The two holes preceding were decent enough.

1. Canterbury GC - Sneaky tough, tons of variety, lots of nuance.
2. Kirtland CC - A bit like a 1920s version of Blackwolf Run, but without the tacky crap.
3. Clovernook CC - My home course.
4. Sycamore Creek CC - Better than I expected. Pretty cool parkland course from the 50s.
5. Beverly CC - One sexy Ross course. Very loud and as good a routing as I've ever seen.
6. Lawsonia Links - Vastly improved from three years ago - returns to my personal top 10 after a few years just outside of it.
7. Persimmon Ridge GC - As tough as anything I've played this year - one awkward set of greens.
8. Devou Park - One really good hole on a course that is otherwise so quirky and bad that it can't help being fun.
9. Wolf Run - Blew me away. Also in my personal top 10.
10. Lassing Pointe - An above average municipal course.

Pretty good variety - some really extraordinary clubs like Canterbury, Kirtland, and Beverly mixed in with a couple of great places to get drunk and hope nobody from a neighboring fairway sends one through the windshield of your cart like Lassing Pointe and Devou.

How did Calumet's greens get by when you played?

John,

I played Calumet 3 or 4 times this year.  The greens were just fine each round.  Probably between 9 and 11 and very true.  They do a nice job with the greens there.

Haven't played as much this year due to having a 9-month old (being a father is the best but it doesn't do wonders for your golf game); my number of rounds are probably 1/3 of my total last year, and I haven't practiced at all. But I still managed to play a few courses.

What did you think of Detroit South?

Ciao

I thought it had some rather good par 3s and also would be a very fun course for younger players, seniors, women and anyone else who would prefer to play a very "playable" course. It was playing as a par 68 at around 6000 yards but it didn't feel like a particularly short course. I definitely got the feeling that the South is very much the "second" course at Detroit GC, but I thought it was very fun and playable, without being a particularly easy course. In that respect, I thought it was very much like Ohio State's Gray course.

The other thing that you can't help noticing is the neighborhood. It's a mix of what looked to be very affluent old homes, and then some homes that were probably very nice 20-30 years ago but have since fallen into disrepair. Then a block away, you see shocking urban decay. I had seen photos of that in Detroit, but until seeing it for yourself, it's tough to appreciate just how rough parts of the city have become.

I love the month of October!  It has been great to me over the years, getting to play in the Mashie the last three years has helped!  My last ten are very good and my next ten are going to be a lot more fun.  Here goes from last to current:
10- Sweetbriar Legacy, Ohio
9- Firestone 9, Ohio
8- Canterbury, Ohio  Thank you Bill and George for setting up this years Mashie!
7- Loch Lomond, Scotland
6- Royal Troon, Scotland
5- Turnberry, Scotland

In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.
