It's rare that I play a lot of courses unless I am travelling - living in Sydney generally means sticking to the home course with occasional forays to Melbourne, or a timeswap between my course and another. But playing in my club's Interclub team has meant seeing a bit more of Sydney golf recently.

The last 10 took six months:
Royal Sydney (x2)
NSWGC (x3)
Bonnie Doon (x>30)
Concord (x3)
St Michael's (x1)
Killara (x2)
Avondale (x1)
Healesville (x1)
Woodlands (x1)
Springwood (x2)

The good: Royal Sydney is much better than I have previously given it credit for, though it's tremendously overbunkered.

The bad: Seeing how many of the city's courses are choking in trees and could be far better than they are with simple, cheap tree management (Killara is getting this right and making good strides).

The ugly: St Michael's. In-house design changes that don't fit, massive bushland encroachment, soft approaches and hard greens (this has become common there). It could be so great, but it's headed backwards, IMO.

A surprise: Avondale is very private and low-key, so it gets very little discussion as few people see it. The course is wonderful. Great land, subtle but interesting greens, width, ideal conditioning, smart bunkering. It reminded me of Newcastle in places. Worth seeking out for those based in Australia or visiting Sydney for a decent length of time.

I guess we know their rater policy!

How was it?

I play there at least once a season.  It's been on the chopping block for a number of years for real estate development but it looks like it's going to survive.

The course is nothing too special, however, the current ownership has made decent strides with some tree removal, bunker improvements and better overall course conditioning.

I might set a record for fewest courses played this year.  I am finding playing the same course time and again more interesting than running around and seeing a bunch of courses.

2013 "has been very, very good to me."

If it is, in fact, the end, then it's been a "tidy" run.

Wow, that's going to hard to recall. Last ten courses probably takes me back well over a year. I'll start from the most recent and see how far back I can recall.

Columbia CC (Blythewood, SC)
Charwood CC (West Columbia, SC)
Papago GC (Phoenix, AZ)
Notts-Hollinwell (England)
Ganton (England)
Reddish Vale (England)
The Ocean Course (Kiawah Island, SC)
Cobblestone Park (Blythewood, SC)

That's my last eight courses and takes me back to early 2012. Going back any farther than that we're talking 200+ rounds of golf ago and it's impossible to say exactly where I played at in 2011.

Guess I just don't get around much any more, as the old song says...
