Chappas, yes my friend although that is a thing of the past as it is nearly 2012 now... Time flies.
Unfortunately my list has barely changed from this thread in August, with the exception of NSW, The Lakes & Stockton. Hopefully will get back your way in 2012.

Tom Birkert wins this on the strength of his US courses alone. Wow.

A hat tip to Bill McBride on his English courses. Interesting group. A man of discerning tastes.

Bob

Bob,

It's not winning, it's the taking part that counts! My colleague on the trip would probably have a more impressive recent list as he was able to complete the trip whereas I had to return home for an emergency.

The atmosphere at top US courses is, in my experience, so welcoming, and that is due to the Members.

We have a different model in terms of access over here, and it's lovely to experience the different cultures.

I agree that it isn't "winning" with the most impressive list.  To me, this thread could be a great conversation starter especially in regards to certain great trips and/or hidden gems.

-Like Lou's mention of Tallgrass.  I'm no expert at this architecture thing, but whoever designed that course has some talent.  That course is well designed and worth playing for sure.

I love stumbling across hidden gems, both in regards to courses and holes.  Adam Clayman told me to continue to play courses regardless if the masses rate them high as I just might find a cool hole and/or course.  He's right.  At The Phoenix Golf Links in Ohio, I found a few really neat holes in the middle of the course...they were fun to play and interesting.  And the 6th hole at Olde Stone resulted in one of my biggest laughs on a golf course with that big ol' hidden bunker in the middle of the fairway.

Anyway, that is just how I see it.  If someone who's played a lot of golf courses and seems to have similar taste as I do plays some random course that I haven't heard of and likes it...maybe I'll give it a whirl.

Thanks Lou.  But I should have put a smiley or winking icon or something.  I knew it was Gil and was being a goof ball.  Another poor attempt at trying to be funny from me.  Sorry.

Mostly Chicago area public courses with the exception of a charity outing at Medinah and a honeymoon round in Costa Rica.

Tango Mar Beach and Golf Resort - Tambor, Costa Rica
Coyote Run GC - Flossmoor, IL
Medinah CC (#1) - Medinah, IL
Glenwoodie GC - Glenwood, IL
Mystic Hills GC (x2) - Culver, IN
The Warren Course - South Bend, IN
Jackson Park GC - Chicago, IL
Hunter's Ridge GC - Princeton, IL
Ravisloe CC - Homewood, IL
Stonewall Orchard - Grayslake, IL

Sven,

I'm not Ross but, I enjoyed a 36 hole day at Mystic Hills in August (played The Warren Course the next day).  Definitely a tale of two very different nines.  The dramatic terrain and wild greens were a nice departure from the flattish courses around Chicago.  My only complaint is that I used the same club on three of the four par 3's.  We solved that issue on the second round by moving up a tee on 3 and 17.

The value was exceptional.  The casual, family run, vibe was great.  We had between round hot dogs with the Super who was quite proud of the whole operation.  I'm planning on going back at least once next season.

Jonathan,

I thought I would be the only one!  We spent the second half of our honeymoon at Tango Mar.  The golf course is one of the quirkiest I've ever played: criss-crossing holes, the smallest green I've ever seen (#2), horse tracks on the greens, and a couple free-range dogs who joined me for a hole (until they realized I didn't have any food to give).  Not surprisingly, I had the whole course to myself.

Michael,

I didn't get to play it because I dislocated my shoulder the night before.... but here's a shot for you of my buddy, Carr.  Man, I still can't believe someone else has seen this place!

Old Macdonald
Bandon Dunes
Bandon Trails
San francisco golf club
Olympic club
Berkshire Red
Royal Cinque Ports
Strandhill
Donegal
Sligo

The highlight of this ten and of my golfing life to date? The Bandon courses - absolutely incredible place - believe me, the Americans can do links golf!  I thought I had seen some nice places but Bandon takes the biscuit for me. As a whole that is. 36 at Pacific Dunes tomorrow. I think I will be coming back here for many years to come.

That is a strong statement from an Irishman (I have that right don't I?).  What was your favorite of the Bandon mix?  Well, wait until you hit Pacific Dunes before you answer.

Mid Pines
Tobacco Road
The Pit
Pinehurst National
Southern Pines

Tanglewood

It's all about the fellowship.
