I'll let people draw their own conclusions on these topics and others not mentioned, but I thoroughly enjoyed the various lists and the commentary.

Nominations for "Greatest Distance Traveled to play Your Last Ten".

1. Tom Doak

2. Mike Whitaker (let's see the list Whit !)

3. Bill Brightly

Sadly, Mr Mayhugh has settled into a England to Kentucky pattern and he maxed out his frequent flyer account last year.  ;)

Just seen this thread, a bit late but here goes

Glasgow Gailes
Nairn Dunbar
Cullen
Moray Old
Moray New
Killermont
Duff House Royal
North Berwick West
Hopeman
Forres

I'd be very happy to play all of them again with the exception of Hopeman which is just OK.

Peter:

1.  Out of the 1275 registered posters, I'd say 400 do not participate, used to participate but no longer do or read a lot of the posts but hardly ever chime in.  So lets call it 875 potentially active posters (probably an overestimate).  This thread has 157 replies in less than two days.  If 100 of those 157 provided a list, we're looking at over 10% of the DG responding.  I'm fine with the sample size.

2.  You'd be right that I had not heard about the courses you noted.  I have now.  Is your point that these courses are somehow not worthy of being discussed on this site?  I doubt that is the case, as they've contributed in some way to the wealth of knowledge you bring to the table.

3.  Part of this exercise was to point out the diversity in courses played by the members of the group, not just the quality.  I actually found the local course knowledge more interesting than the courses that were part of a travel itinerary, as the destination courses rarely contained a surprise.  We all have our constraints on getting out to play (time, money, weather), but its interesting to me to see where people choose to play when they get their golf window.  I love Lahinch, but I don't get to play it that often.  The course that has more value to me is the course I pick when I have a free afternoon.

I don't understand why anyone would participate in a thread like this.  It is an embarrassment, though I am curious to know which Doak client got him on Augusta National.  If one of you who has speculated on IM would care to reveal who, please do.  The one thing I learned about myself is that my Mother was most likely right, if all my friends jumped off a bridge I would have probably followed. I have had to fight the urge to list it up myself.

I so miss the days when guys like Huckaby and Gib would go on and on about how difficult it is to play those courses they didn't feel like visiting but did so for the good of the game.  I know it was all part of the con but it made me feel like I was part of something special.  Now I just feel dirty.

The last ten courses I didn't play for various reasons.

1. Castle Pines
2. Augusta National
3. Muirfield Village
4. The Old Course
5. Carnoustie
6. Colorado Golf Club
7. Rock Creek Cattle
8. Richland County Country Club
9. Los Angeles Country Club
10. Merion

JK,

Can't believe you skipped Carnoustie.  Seems right up your alley and you can get a membership for your bar tab at the club... ;)

I have boycotted all things Scottish at least until the Lockerbie Bomber dies.  I was moving my golf books last week and fought the urge to go when I stumbled upon a program for the Open.

I count over 60% of the latest Golf Mag World Ranking in the lists posted.

Those not played fall into a couple of categories:

Remote - Hirono, Teeth of the Dog, Nine Bridges, Kawana, Nanea, Kauri Cliffs, Tokyo, Durban

Royal - you can figure them out

Private - Winged Foot, Chicago, San Francisco, Southern Hills, Valley Club

There were a few not yet mentioned that surprised me - Ballybunion, Lahinch, Whistling Straits, Harbour Town, Waterville.

I’ll help close your gap…

Teeth of the Dog (Casa de Campo, DR)
Dye Fore(Casa de Campo, DR)
The Links(Casa de Campo, DR)
Coronado Muni Golf Course (San Diego, CA)
Steele Canyon Golf Club (San Diego Area)
Salt Creek Golf Club (San Diego Area)
All four at Bandon
Westham Golf Course (Richmond, VA)
Providence Golf Course (Richmond, VA)
Independence Golf Club (Richmond, VA)
Stonehouse (Williamsburg, VA)

Some of these lists are pretty amazing. Mine is definitely more "average." Just goes to show that interest in gca isn't confined to those who play famous courses.

This list goes back to last October. I also played 9 holes at SeaScape (the back nine was closed for aeration) during my OBX tour. My favorite course on the list is the Cavalier because of its classic character.

Kilmarlic GC, NC (Tom Steele)
Nags Head GL, NC (Bob Moore)
Carolina Club, NC (Russell Breeden)
Currituck Club, NC (Rees Jones)
The Pointe GC, NC   (Russell Breeden)
Bide-A-Wee, VA (Fred Findlay/Tom Clark)
Kingsmill/River, VA (P. Dye)
Red Wing Lake GC, VA (Geo. Cobb/Kevin Tucker)
V.B. National, VA (P. Dye)
Cavalier G&YC, VA (C. Banks/L. George)
Life's too short to waste on bad golf courses or bad wine.

Safe to say...

I think the point of this thread has been sufficiently proved.  The GCA.com crowd on average is very very far away from your average weekend muni-warrior.

And here are my last 10, in summary form, names excluded for no other reason as this gets to the root of the question:

6 Publics, avg Doak 3.3

4 Privates, avg Doak 7.0

Here are mine. Newest is on the bottom. Some really good. One really bad.

Hastings Country Club, Hastings, Minn.

Hazeltine National Golf Club, Chaska, Minn.

Highland National Golf Course, St. Paul, Minn.

Brackett’s Crossing Country Club, Lakeville, Minn.

TPC Twin Cities, Blaine, Minn.

Blackberry Ridge Golf Club, Sartell, Minn.

Hawks Landing Golf Club, Verona, Wis.

Skokie Country Club, Glencoe, Ill.

Blue Mound Golf and Country Club, Wauwatosa, Wis.

Southview Country Club, West St. Paul, Minn.

I see four potential candidates for "really bad" but am unsure of the winner.

The only one on that list that is really bad is Highland National.

Everything else is at least decent. Blackberry Ridge is a Goldstrand that has a stupid first hole and a super tight third hole, but also has a bunch of decent holes. Hawks Landing is a John Harbottle that grew on me as the round went along. Massive fairways, but there were clearly parts of the fairway that gave you a much, much easier approach shot.

TPC Twin Cities, Bracketts and Hastings are all plenty fine in my estimation. I don't love TPC Twin Cities, but I like it more than I did. My round at Bracketts was my first there in seven or eight years and I think it is all right. Hastings has a few too many trees in spots and the first third of the course is pretty boring, but the back nine is pretty fun.

Not sure of the point of this thread unles you rate them, other than it’s a trip down memory lane.

Epping GC – unclassifiable
Deal   8
South Essex Raven 9 holes very average. 2/3
Crowlands Heath (it’s not really) a bit better than average 3
Formby   7
Seascale 5
Silloth 6
Lytham 6
North Berwick WL   8
Portmarnock 8.5
Edited because I forgot one and I was too mean about another.

Canyon Springs (home-Idaho)
Sun Valley (White Clouds-ID)
Sun Valley (Trail Creek-ID)
Jackpot, NV (local-NV)
Bandon (all 4 + walked The Preserve par 3)
93 Golf Ranch (local-Idaho)
Blue Lakes CC (local-Idaho)
Indian Wells (Players, IW, CA)
Eagle Falls (Indio, CA)
Indian Palms CC (Indio, CA)
Huntsman Springs (Driggs, ID)

All this year but Huntsman which was last Fall.  Not seriously into rankings.  All fun for different reasons.  Of interest to the treehouse: Bandon & Huntsman.  Not really worth bragging about.  I'm leaving out some locals, I'm sure. So, for what it's worth, I have no idea.

New Zealand  6
Northumberland  4
Worplesdon  5
Gerrards Cross  3
Berkshire Red  7
Berkshire Blue  6
Brampton  4
Spring Valley, WI  4

Selfishness.

  How?

Selfish only in the sense that people look like they are playing the courses that fill their needs without regard for those less fortunate.

Ballyneal - Holyoke, Colorado
Bayside - Ogallala, Nebraska
West Winds - Ogallala, Nebraska
Heritage Hills - McCook, Nebraska
Cross Creek - Cambridge, Nebraska

Pelican Lakes - Windsor, Colorado
