Re:Sunningdale

I assume you played the pre-version.  I love the work there though I never saw the original.  Any thoughts?

I played it a few years back in a qualifier. Not sure if it was pre or post renovation-it's hard to keep up these days with renovations and rerenovations ;).
I was quite impressed with the course but this go round was a qualifier as well so I wasn't focused on architecture, but rather scoring. Sadly, I did not adjust to the pace of the greens and left every single putt woefully short -which is on me and inexcuseable. The greens were in good condition.
I'd put it perhaps a notch below Wykagyl? (which I really like but to be fair played with a more watchful eye)

Made everything the next day at Bethpage Red in another qualifier(it is amazing how much more often the ball goes in it it reaches the hole). Have always enjoyed that course, though they are starting to get infected with the Black's love of unkempt, long, lush, hunt your ball grass in the rough. The Black lost its architecture in the "maintenance"(gunch rough and narrow fairways) years ago-hate to see the Red trending that direction(though way better than the Black)

The scale of the property was surprising. Much bigger than I thought it would feel. Holes 2,3,4 were my favorite stretch of holes. 2 required either a lay up or a right to left shot shape off the tee. Otherwise, the ball would likely land in the water. 3 was a fun par 3 with a small pot bunker front center of the green. And 4 was a long hole playing uphill. A nice variety of shots called for in that span of holes.

Tom,

Have you given a public opinion of Ohoopee?

No, but I was impressed.  I thought it was Gil's best work that I have seen.  [I still have never seen Boston Golf Club.]  Most of what I'd read about it focused on the experience rather than the golf, so I did not go in with super-high expectations, but the golf is very very good.

Lookout Point CC
Hamilton G&CC - West/South
Diamond Springs GC
The Mines GC
Pilgrim's Run
Arcadia Bluffs - South
Arcadia Bluffs - Bluffs
Forest Dunes - The Loop (Black and Red)
Forest Dunes GC
Forest Dunes - Bootlegger

Some thoughts:

- Forest Dunes as a whole may be one of the firmest/fastest golf resorts in North America. Just superb conditioning and a truly superb resort as a whole with incredible variety.  Will only get better with another course supposedly on the way. I wish there were more "Bootleggers" in the world...loads of fun. The Loop is pretty brilliant and I must say, the original course at FD is really growing on me.  It's excellent.
- Biggest pleasant surprise on my Michigan trip was the South Course at Arcadia Bluffs.  Had little to no expectations coming in and I was really impressed with the design, strategy and conditioning. The Bluffs Course is like drinking a Coke Classic - the immediate sugar rush gets you all ramped up early then you crash hard at the end. But I still do like drinking the occasional Coke regardless...
- The Grand Rapids leg of the trip was loads of fun and the value you get playing Pilgrim's Run, The Mines and Diamond Springs is off the charts. Something like $160.00 all-in for those three courses combined? Phenomenal.
- I was able to see the Martin Ebert renovation at Hamilton G&CC as they prepare for the 2024 Canadian Open. They've opened up corridors through a major tree-clearing program, changed grassing lines considerably both in the fairways and around the greens with short grass chipping areas in abundance. And the bunkers were all redone to bring a more uniform character throughout. I'd say the work brings Hamilton back into the discussion to be among the top 5-8 courses in the country.

1. Westwood, Bredemus original redone by Foster years ago, very good!

2. Windrose in all out drought conditions.

3. Trinity Forest, I expected awesome but awesome doesn't do it justice.

4. Galveston CC, neat old course with always crazy paspalum grass.

5. Royal Oaks, immaculate condition cool club with a kinda bleh course.

6. Memorial Park, fantastic as always.

7. See above.

8. Gus Wortham, very underrated muni that flies under the radar because of Memorial Park.

9. Crown Colony, time and tree management haven't been kind to this old Von Hagge/Devlin.

10. Sharpstown Park, flat and uninteresting surrounded by asian strip malls, and seedy apartments.

Perhaps not surprisingly, 2022 has been the best year in a while...in addition to my usual haunts of the Gogs, Harlech, Porthcawl and Huntercombe, I have sampled

RWN Brancaster
Worplesdon
The Wirral (Wirral Ladies as was)
Leasowe
RL Hoylake
Wallasey
Thorndon Park  (new to me)
RCP Deal
Rolls of Monmouth (new to me)
West Hill (new to me)
Woking

Of those new to me, West Hill was an absolute delight, every bit as enjoyable in its own way as the two other 'Ws', and Thorndon Park was a really unexpected pleasure.

Prestwick and one of the Troons to come later this month. So a (very) lucky boy.
