Mac,
Thanks for the enquiry. It is as good as it gets. I can play but there is a significant loss of distance but at least I can get out there.
More great courses in this part of the world. Well worth the effort getting down under.

I have not played as much so far this year as I did last year.  I've seen quite a few courses, but also a lot of rain and cold weather and wind, so I've walked more than I've hit it around.  Still, it's a diverse list [from most recent]:

Mt. Bruno
Royal Montreal (Blue)
Laval Sur-Le-Lac (Blue)
Forest Dunes (The Loop - front nine of Black course, then backwards on the same holes)
Idle Hour
Old Silo
Inverness
Barton Hills
Harvester
Pacific Dunes

Two weeks from tomorrow, Forest Dunes is going to be on here a lot :  we're playing three rounds in each direction for the Hundred Hole Hike!

The year to date:

Porthcawl
Gog Magog (Old)
Harlech
Tadmarton Heath
Delamere Forest
Wallasey
Hoylake
Pennard
Gog Magog (Wandlebury)
Huntercombe
Southerndown

One slightly heretical footnote: I have now played four times at Pennard, in visits spanning nearly thirty years, and I still don't quite get the profound love shared by many friends on this site. It's partly that on recent visits conditioning seems to have crossed the line from 'pleasingly shaggy and natural' to 'frankly, a bit of a mess', but it's not just that. Within Wales, Pennard does have a bit of a marmite reputation as a course about which people seem to have strong views, one way or the other, and I guess that for once I find myself on the wrong side of a GCA enthusiasm. I would equate it, on my personal principality chart, with Southerndown, another elevated course of natural charm where the greens last month were not good after a tough winter, and need to come on greatly over the next few weeks in readiness for the Welsh Amateur Championship later this summer. I continue to think that both Porthcawl and Harlech are in a quite different league and not just because (on the evidence of the past few weeks) the greens at both are currently terrific. But I am not a remotely neutral observer.

Most enjoyable new experience of 2016 - Delamere, a little ahead (for me) of Wallasey, but both were great fun in different ways, as was (my other newbie) Tadmarton. So altogether, a pretty pleasing first half.

Richard:

You said it's not just conditioning, yet all of your comments about all four courses you mentioned were about ... conditioning.

Pennard is certainly not for everyone's tastes, and I've known plenty of people who didn't like it.  It's not about strategic bunkering or subtle greens contours.  It's a wild thing.  But it does sound like conditioning factors heavily in your analysis.

Yes, Old Silo really appears to be struggling.  It didn't look like they had maintained the bunkers in a year, the floors were mostly dirt or gravel.  And, unfortunately for them, there are a LOT of bunkers, as they were supposed to be a primary feature of the course.

I would be interested to hear your thoughts on having so many bunkers on an upscale public course? One prominent member here made the comment to me that it was architectural malpractice to expect Old Silo could maintain that many bunkers given their location and business model. I would be curious to see if an architect would somewhat agree.
