Sleepy Hollow Golf Course (Ohio) New
« on: July 20, 2011, 12:12:17 AM »
Sleepy Hollow is a hidden gem of sorts. Playing here for $33 prime time is a steal and Cleveland Metroparks really has something great going.

Nice pics, thanks for sharing. Not nearly as flat as I would have expected, from my limited time in Cleveland (they only allow Stiller fans limited time...). I'm really bummed I missed the outing, will have to try to get up there at some point to see it in person.

George:

The greater Cleveland area isn't Pittsburgh,  ;D but it's full of wonderful land for golf, particularly if -- as Sleepy Hollow does -- you get near the Cuyahoga River Valley.

Sleepy Hollow is a wonderful course; I just wish they'd get rid of those awful cart paths that mar so many of the visuals.

Good point Phil, the east side may as well be Pittsburgh geographically compared to the relatively flat western suburbs. Not suprisingly, most of the best courses in the city reside in and around the Cuyahoga river valley (Canterbury,TCCPP, Kirtland, Sand Ridge, etc.)

"Playing here for $33 prime time is a steal."

Based on the photo tour, I would say that $33 is appropriate.

Just out of curiosity, have you been to the Burgh many times? I visited my good friends from school a couple times and they lived in Beechwood, Pepper Pike and Shaker Heights - it was flat as a pancake! :) My friends even commented, when visiting me, on how much hillier Pittsburgh is. Of course, I live in the North Hills, so maybe my perspective is a little warped.

Phil, your land might be better for golf. Most Burgh courses have at least a few holes that are really quirky, sometimes even silly, due to the terrain.

Paul, you must be spoiled!

George,

I go out to Pittsburgh a couple times a year. I'm actually headed there for a bachelor party (Beruit must've been booked ;)) in a couple of weeks.

I  don't think I was clear enough in my post. I was just saying that Compared to the west side (which is flat), the hillier east side may as well be pittsburgh. You are correct that comparing the topography of the two cities may as well be comparing Tulsa to San Francisco

There is more elevation than you may think however. The back 9 at krtland is all the proof you need for that.

There's nothing in Cleveland to compare to Mt. Washington hanging over the city in Pittsburgh however. It's a stunning view from up there

Great pic, thanks Carr. I think I understand what you're saying.

Might I suggest leaving the Browns gear in the car when you come for a visit? :) Indians gear would likely be fine.

My best client has opened an affiliated restaurant in Cleveland that I suggest you guys try: Fat Head's Saloon & Brewery. Haven't been there yet, but the original is great, and the owner is one of the best guys I know.

George,

I think at this point me wearing Browns gear in Pittsburgh would go over about as threateningly as someone sporting a Washington Generals t-shirt at a  Harlem Globetrotters rally  ;)

Thanks for the restaurant reccomendation, I'll give it a try.

Paul:

I don't want to criticize Frank's photography; I think he captured the course as it's found and played by many. A few notes and background that might be helpful:

-- SH is a true muni. It's the crown jewel, so to speak, of the Cleveland metro-parks golf courses, but it's not going to be in the condition of its contemporary and nearby golfing neighbors, by any means (Kirtland, Canterbury, Pepper Pike and The Country Club). In some respects, and I think this is pretty evident in some of Frank's pics, the maintenance budget may well help the course play fairly fast and firm through the green.

-- Thompson routed the course in an interesting way, in that you move in and out of those ravines throughout the round. To me, it has a nice ebb-and-flow to it -- the kind of thing that may be hard to capture in pics, but is evident when you play it.

-- I think the greens here are under-rated, and like many photo threads, greens without grand contours often photograph as flat, dull things. To start, the greens aren't all that big -- they can be tough to hold with an approach shot. Second, they have subtle rolls and tilts that probably can only be appreciated by playing the course, as opposed to looking at pics. They may look like simple ovals, and they are certainly not the best set of greens around, but they are plenty challenging.

-- As I've noted, I do think the cart paths are awful, and should just be torn up and replaced with gravel/dirt mixture. I get that the course, as a muni, probably has to rely on some level of cart traffic. But there's no need for them to be winding all over the course, interrupting views and occasionally coming into play. It's a pretty smart golfing set that plays SH for the most part; even though it's a muni, you're not getting the hacks at SH, and they'd know how to drive their carts appopriately without all those ugly paths.

Frank:

I agree; SH at $33 is unbelieveably good value. You'd have to look long and hard to find other courses of this quality at that price. I doubt there are too many.

I haven't played Sleepy Hollow for quite a while, but believe it was in its prime - as far as maintenance of the greens - in the 1980's during the Charley Sifford days. At that time the  greens matched any of the highly regarded private clubs in the area.

Truthfuuly, I don't think Frank's pictures really captured how neat the place is and how fun and challenging many of the holes are.

Sleepy Hollow makes the case for how golf in America lost its way with $100 green fees for the country club for a day.

Pictures will never show how good a golf course Sleepy Hollow is. If I had gone by the pictures I had seen before playing...I would have never made the trip.

Sleepy Hollow is a solid golf course. I enjoyed it when I played it back in 2004-05.
Best Played So Far This Season:
Crystal Downs CC (MI), The Bridge (NY), Canterbury GC (OH), Lakota Links (CO), Montauk Downs (NY), Sedge Valley (WI)

Frank,

I agree with you that photographing golf courses is actually a very difficult thing to do.  There are only two courses where I have taken "good pictures". They are both places I am a member - Sand Ridge and Ballybunion - and where I have had the time to take many pictures in order to get a few good ones.

I wish the pictures on this thread still worked... Count me as a big fan of SH, especially when it is firm and fast.  If you are in the area, check this place out.  You will not be disappointed in the course or the cost.
