Bill, its the Old although it might be a bit of composite, they certainly dont play the old short par 4/ long par 3 first. I think they use two holes on the new and join the 3rd and 4th holes. Not 100% though.
A combination of whats good for golf and good for turf.

Thanks. Will play the Old in September and get a first hand look.

Our group of three on Tuesday, September 27th, needs a fourth as it's a two ball afternoon on the Old.  Lunch at noon, golf at 1:30.  Anyone who will be in the London area that day and would like to join us, please drop me an email or IM, thanks.

From Randy's blog it appears they are skipping the par 3 1st hole on the clubhouse side of the road and starting on Old #2. They must be using a hole from New for the par 5 second. The hole that normally follows #2 is a short par 4 and this in not listed in Randy's blog.

Here is an image of the layout for the composite course used for this year's Senior Open

Someone said its the same composite layout used in the 1981 Ryder Cup

Cheers

After reading Randy's blog, I'd like to find a job like the one he has. Nice replies by everyone about WH. I understand it to be one of the UK's best parkland courses.

Close. It's one of the country's best heathland courses. Maybe the very best genuine open heathland course.

Looking at the map Ben posted, the course they're playing is 2 Old, then 4-13 of the old (with 4 played from a back tee way down the 3rd fairway), two holes of the New course and then 14-18 of the Old.

R. Haag shot even par 72 today in the opening round and is tied with Tom Kite, Nick Price, Fred Funk and Corey Pavin, among others. The low scores of the day were a couple of 68's.

His thoughts on the day, the course and playing out of heather are at: www.randyhaag.com

DaveE - Parkland!! WH is as heathland as they come despite the clay soil, it is a delightful place to play and difficult for handicap players to score on as we will always find the heather a couple of times in the round.

Ben you are right, from memory they are playing the 1981 Ryder Cup layout, 12 & 13 are actually the same numbered holes from the New replacing 1 & 3 on the Old course.

The course looks fantastic on the tv.  Unfortunately it is not playing as firm and fast as it has historically (and for most of this year). So, the players are describing a "parkland" type experience.  I'd love to see the wind come up and show these guys where they actually are.

Amateur Randy Haag shot 68 today and is tied with Bernhard Langer & Tom Lehman after 3 rounds at one-under par. Read all about it at:
