Hilton Head public courses
« on: July 16, 2011, 03:22:08 PM »
I will be down at Hilton Head for the first time next week and am looking for recommendations for public access courses to play with my son and family members. Which is most interesting architecturally and what is the best value in your opinion? Thanks.

I always wanted to try the Cupp course here.  Most of the big-name stuff in that area is private.  Fascinating thread recently on Melrose...did you see that one?

Ed,

Be sure to pick up a copy of the Golfer's Guide in any of the local markets and convenient stores. Plenty of coupons inside with listings for all of the public and resort courses in the area. My rec is to try either Old South (value) or the Hills course at Palmetto Dunes (not your typical flat low country course. Hills designed some ripples in the fairways). I also like John Conley's rec of the Cupp at P Hall, but I haven't been in several years. It's a fun golf course with a look unlike any other (designed on a computer with lots of linear features).

Of course architecturally, Harbour Town would be the one to see, but it has always been pretty expensive to play it. They are running twilight specials now however. This summer the twilight rate is I believe $135 after 4PM. Still a lot, but not the $225+ it used to be year round.

I think the Palmetto Dunes courses are in the $55 range in the afternoon this summer and Old South, even less.

Have fun! Hope you're well!

Thanks for the recommendations, I think the Cupp at PD or Old South will fit the bill. I'll check out Harbour Town and Long Cove when I take a solo trip some other time.

Hilton Head National has 27 holes designed by Gary Player and company.  It is nice because you get to experience three totally different styles with three public access nines.  It is also very central off the main drag in Blufton, SC next to the bridge that goes to Hilton Head.

There are only 18 at HHN now.  The city bought 9 to put in a new road.

It's been about six years or so but I've made multiple stops at Hilton Head National and always found it worthwhile.

I go to the Hilton Head area at least once every year, and I agree Old South is one of the better area courses for interesting design and value.  Also right off the island is Eagles Pointe, which I really enjoy.  It is reasonably priced and has some solid golf holes.  On the island, if don't want to spring for Harbour Town, an interesting option is Heron Point (also in Sea Pines) which was recently completely redesigned by Pete Dye.  It is about 1/3 the cost of Harbour Town and still has some pretty interesting and neat holes.  If you want any more specific recommendations, please feel free to send me a message.  Enjoy.
