Did you boys catch Miguel Angel Jimenez's post-round interview yesterday? ESPN does a two-question interview and the interviewer (let's call him "Jim") will offer a parting shot, to which the player is required merely to smile and nod.
Jimenez's interview was directed by two questions: (a) tell me 'bout your round; and (b) what does Seve Ballesteros mean to you (after all, your a Spaniard, and so forth). The 'parting shot' was "I see you have your cigars in hand--you're a man who loves life. Back to you, Mike."
Well, Jimenez wouldn't duck out so easily: "Yes, golf is a great enjoyment in life. Wine and cigars, too, add to all of life's charms. Understand the aesthetic pleasures of life, the enriching pleasures...." He went on, and on, and on. And you could see "Jim" gesturing with his left hand, trying to move things along, trying to get back to the tower. And you could read his mind, saying "Geez, Miguel, this was just a parting comment, not another interview question". Jimenez was profoundly and charmingly oblivious to the lateness of the hour, as it were. He simply held forth. Philosophical. Aristocratic.
It appears that another interviewer, knowing Jimenez's love of Rioja, the interviewer asked Miguel if he would be celebrating his 66 with a glass or two. Jimenez responded, "no, not celebrating--but of course I will have a glass of Rioja tonight."
I love this man.
