Open Championship Winner

You only get one pick.

Mine is Ross Fisher, 80-1 odds at present.  I just have a feeling it's going to be a bit of a quirky winner, but not so quirky as an American hoisting the Claret Jug, so I'll go with the under-the-radar Englishman.

Luke Donald, he's playing well, he generally plays well in the British Open, and this doesn't seem to be a course that bombers will have a distinct advantage.

Like the Ross Fisher pick.

I'm pulling for Goosen and Ogilvy, but my pick is:

Brian Davis.

No real reason, just figured it gives me the best chance of looking like a genius when he wins. :)

Sergio, not sure what his odds are, but he has been playing better this year.  I think he will win a major at some point so why not this one?

Luke Donald.  He counts as an American, right?

I like the out-of-left-field, semi-obscure choice -- and there are some good candidates out there, like the Molinari brothers.

I'm still somewhat surprised that neither Casey nor Poulter have a major title yet; I'm going with the sartorially splendid Poulter.

Nick Watney.

Since everyone else is ignoring Terry's plea for one only, I'll throw out Jason Day for my sleeper.  Day to "place or show" as they say at Pimlico:)

I'm going with the homer logical pick; Stricker.  I can't see why he can't pick up the speed of the greens, figure them out and putt the lights out as he usually does.  He is straight enough off tee, and has a great caddie to help guide him around strategically.  He is the best golfer at this point, not to win a major, by a wide margin in my view.  If not now, the PGA at Atlanta, where he has done well in that climate and greens type at East Lake.

Outside surprise under-the-radar;  young Mattie Manassero.  That would be historic!  ;D

Robert Rock - No particular reason, but he looks like a nice guy, finished 7th last year, 23rd this year in the US Open, he's from the island, and his name would make for good late night fodder.

Ok, maybe not an American. But he's as close to a Chicagoan the top of the OWGR has seen in some time.

Bernhard Langer--I was amazed that he was in the field, actually.  Have you seen his record at Sandwich?  He finished just behind Rogers in 1981, Lyle in 1985 and Norman in 1993.  No entrant knows the course like he does.  It would make a tremendous story.

But my money is on Westwood.

Adrian,

Going out on a limb there, are you not ?  ;D

Ross Fisher - he was my bet last week and might as well not turned up.

This week I have bet 5 for outright wins, the Molinari brothers, Cabrera, Poulter and Day.

Niall

edit: I actually bet Peter Hanson rather than Cabrera, my mistake. Just in case anyone is silly enough to follow my lead at the bookies !
