Your Top 10 courses since 1995
« on: July 13, 2011, 09:29:42 AM »
In discussing my recent trip to Sand Hills with several friends, we started debating the top 10 of the "Modern "Modern" Era" (Courses built since 1995).  Here is mine:

1. Sand Hils
2. Pacific Dunes
3a. Ballyhack
3b. Cape Kidnappers
5. Kinloch
6. Sebonack
7. Ballyneal
8. Bandon Trails.
9. Kukio
10. Blackstone - Mission Hills Hainan

Definetly an incomplete list of "candidates" as I haven't been to Friar's Head, Arcadia Bluffs, Kingsley Club, Old Mac, Whistling Straigts, Sutton Bay, Old Sandwhich, Galloway National, Gozzer, among many others...

Definitely a good list.  You have to add Old Mac and Whistling Straits to it.  I'd drop Sebonack and Bandon Trails, and probably  substitute Nanea for Kukio (which I like but not as well as its neighbor across the road).

RCCC must be on that list.  Possibly number 1 on that list.

Jeremy,

You are well spoke and clearly better looking than our typical poster.  Could you give us a quick bio, as I am a little lost on how to respond to your excellent threads.  Please keep up the outstanding contributions.

lol...I am the proud father of 3 amazing kids (9 and 5 year old girls, 4 year old son), husband to a wonderful physician and hardest working mother I know, and marketer/agent at Octagon in our athletes and personalities division (part of Interpublic- IPG).  I left a career in molecular genetics (proud recipient of my Masters from the Medical College of Virginia at VCU)  to work in the business side of golf for David Leadbetter in 2002.  I have been with Octagon since 2006 and proudly represent Hank Haney along with work on other key clients such as Michael Phelps, Apolo Ohno and others.  I live in Richmond, Virginia, play as often as I can, with business driving over 100,000 air miles a year.  Golf Architectural highlights include sitting in the bar at Cape Kidnappers with Tom Doak and Alex Miceli following the Kiwi Challenge sharing design ideas and great kiwi beer, of course trips to Bandon and Sand Hills, a round at Cypress Point with a blown out back where I luckily took more pictures than i hit shots, playing Ballyhack on opening day, beating Vinny Giles in 2 of 3 MOAB's at Kinloch and getting pounded by him at Seminole, and 10 years of walking Augusta National for 5 or 6 days in a row during The Masters with some of the most interesting people in golf.  Though i haven't played it, i feel like i know it better than any course in the world.  I'm looking forward to making more contributions here!

We had the opportunity to head up to Nanea, but we had Kukio pretty much to ourselves.  The conditioning there is unreal, and the comfort stations and BBQ chicken pizza made it hard to leave...

Jeremy,

You have a really neat job!

As for your list, the three courses that I think stand out on your list as possibly too high with the GCA crown would be Kinloch, Kukio, Ballyhack and Blackstone - Mission Hills. Having said that I haven't been to any of those courses. If this is just a personal list of your modern favorites I would say its pretty solid.

Yes - purely a personal list, and the sample population is definitely incomplete (though I would posit that almost everyone who contributes has a hole in their sample population somewhere - some more than others).  I would like to see others post their lists as I am interested in other newer (and potentially non-obvious) courses to add to my must play list.  I would say that I believe Ballyhack to be as fun a golf course as I have played in my life, with fun, strategic decisions, firm and fast conditions, dramatic scenery, wonderful service and amenities, convenience to a decent size commercial airport among the many virtues it possess. Anyone within a 3 hour flight from Atlanta is roughly 5 hours from balls in the air at Ballyhack.

Tom - One of my top 10 goals in golf is to play all of your top 10's!!  Alex Miceli and I got frost delayed out of a last chance to play Beechtree, where did that fit on YOUR list? How would you rank the renovations you've done? I just played Atlantic City CC and loved it!

Here's my list.  I included the Ocean Course at Kiawah, even though it was completed in 1991.  It has been redone significantly since 1995, and I really didn't have another good course to fit into my top 10.

1. Ballyneal
2. Renaissance
3. Dismal River
4. Inniscrone
5. The Ocean Course at Kiawah
6. May River
7. Lederach
8. Morgan Hill
9. Long Shadow
10. Galloway National

I have many, many Doak/C&C courses left to play, along with a few other gems I'm scheduled to see this year.

Ballyneal and Old Mac, both of which are likely to make the cut...

Not ranked in any order here these 5 also happen to be 5 of my top 6 regardless of date.  What a great 16 years of GCA!

Kingsley Club
Pacific Dunes
Ballyneal
Sand Hills
Old Macdonald

Bill McBride as one of the lucky few to visit... did you intentionally leave out my favorite course built since 1995?
I do think it is better than half of your list.

Obviously your job has better access than mine:

Pacific Dunes
Ballyneal
Barnbougle Dunes
Bandon Trails
Old Macdonald
Rustic Canyon
Chambers Bay
Cuscowilla
Bandon Dunes
Stone Eagle

I have not received an invitation to Texas yet. ;)

Good question for me; I've played quite a few moderns.  Not Matt Ward numbers, mind you.  In no particular order:

Ballyneal
Pacific Dunes
Sand Hills
Kinloch
Bandon Trails

Old Macdonald
Friar's Head
Rock Creek Cattle Co.
Bandon Dunes

I can't decide who to put at #10.  Four or five courses are about equal in my book, including Boston Golf Club and Pronghorn (Nicklaus), which is a very interesting test of one's shotmaking and ballstriking skills.

Good topic Jeremy.

Cape Kidnappers is really only tied with Ballyhack? I haven't seen either, but CK just seems like it should/would/could be #1 on any list of any sort, not to take anything away from Ballyhack.

My list in order:

1. Pacific Dunes
2. Ballyneal
3. Sand Hills
4. Kingsbarns
5. European Club
6. Bandon Dunes
7. Bandon Trails
8. Harvester
9. Giants Ridge
10. Windsong Farm
