I'm very sorry to hear this.  I had asked about how he was doing when I was in Australia a couple of weeks ago, and the news was not encouraging.  I should have tried to call.

I have not met many golf writers who loved the game as much as Tom Ramsey did.  He loved to write about it, and he loved to get out and see new courses.  When I was keeping the ballots for the rankings of the top 100 courses in the world, it was Tom who had seen more courses on our ballot than anyone else.

He had battled cancer for the last ten years.  When he thought he had it licked, 6-7 years ago, he said he was going to take his doctor to play some of his favorite courses around the world, and I asked where I could help arrange a game for them.  He picked Merion -- he said it was special to him because of David Graham's win there in 1981 -- and I was able to arrange for three of us to play with a member friend.  It was a great day, and it was only afterward that his doctor took me aside to note that it was the first time Tom had been able to walk 18 holes since his surgery.  [Merion is walking-only, and Tom did not want to ask for an allowance.]

He was a big fan of The Confidential Guide -- he had one of the original copies because he had been such a help to me on my first trips to Australia -- and he used to print what I'd said about various tournament venues in the papers across Australia, long before the book was in the public domain.  I did not know what to think of that at first, but it certainly helped get my name out a bit in that part of the world, and ultimately paved the way for me to work down under.  I will always owe him a great debt.

P.S.  The book of his we've always liked most is one called "Great Australian Golf Holes", which has descriptions and great pics of many of the best holes on the sand belt courses and others in Oz.  Right now, my copy is in the crew's apartment down at Streamsong, so they can look at great bunkers before they go to sleep every night ...

Tom,

I second Colin's comment. That was very nice of you.

Owning both of his books, Tom Ramsey was one of the reasons I always wanted to make it to Australia. Thanks to the Ren Cup I finally made it, only to discover that like Ireland I enjoyed the people as much as the golf courses.

Tom was a terrific bloke who loved to play and and he was the only golf journalist in Australia who knew and cared about architecture.
As Tom said he was printing pieces of the Confidential Guide in his column in the early 1990s - I remember reading them and thinking that whoever was writing the critiques really knew what he was talking about.

Golf Digest in Australia did a fantastic interview with him a few months ago. I will try and find it.

A sad loss for Australian golf.
Tom was a good golfer himself and he developed personal friendships with many of the great players of the day.
He was brash and opinionated but his heart was always in the right place. And he put out some excellent books.

Am sorry to hear of his passing. His two books Great Australian Golf holes and Great Australian courses were interesting to read for their time.

He was a constant on many Australian golf course ranking panels over the years and whilst some of them seemed a little "odd" at times - they were after all his opinion.

That is sad news... I was just thinking about him the other day.

He was a member of Manly Golf Club during the 70s and 80s and I played with him a number of times. He was at the time about 6-7 h'cap and liked to play... fast.

Late one afternoon, after being entertained by his opinions on everyone involved in golf for 3 hours, we arrived at the par-3 18th, where we had to wait on a couple of old dears finishing up on the green. After a few choice words about the speed at which they were playing. He turned to me and asked how I started playing the game... I told him about my connection to NSW, at which point he blurted out "So what the f--k are you doing playing here?"

Fortunately I took his advice a couple of years later.

Ramsey's book "25 Great Australian Golf Courses" is one of my prize possessions. He was one of the best of the contemporary golf writers, especially relating to great golf courses and architecture.

I got my  Ramsey books from Peter Yagi when he had a store front in Redmond, WA.  They were from his private collection and I pestered him for quite a while before he sold them to me. At that time there really wasn't any other books available on Australian golf courses. I still enjoy the books.

Sounds like he had quite a life.

Dos Equis used Tom Ramsey as the model for The World's Most Interesting Man.

Mike,
Any luck on finding the Golf Digest interview? What projects do you have in the works these days?

I will see what I can do to dig it up when I am home at the end of the week.

Mike,
Enjoy the trip. I'll see if I can dig anything up in the meantime about Tom. YouTube? What's that? ;)

Clayts, Ed et al,

I've got the copy of Aust Golf Digest with the Ramsey article.
I'll see if I can scan it and upload it this week.

Mark,

We did see the amazing chateau in Chantilly last night - it was in View to a Kill  - and the racecourse right opposite.
How they cannot be playing the Ryder Cup here instead of that old tip site across town is unbelievable. Chantilly is such a beautiful place and perfectly shows off the country as well as its best golf.
Of course it's not unbelievable at all.

Very sorry to hear this.  I probably played The Ocean Course with him about half a dozen times.  It was was one of his favorites.  He always brought a number of his mates from Oz with him, including a winery owner (he loved his wine), his stock broker friend and, on his most recent trip, his doctor.  He will be missed...  But, it has to have him spinning in his grave that so many of the articles have him pictured with Greg Norman, whom he never cared for to say the least...
