John Sutherland in the US
« on: July 04, 2011, 02:44:54 PM »
I was reading a snippet from Golf Illustrated from 1910 the other day (yes, I'm somewhat behind in my reading) which mentioned Sutherland of Dornoch fame had just returned from a trip to the US where he got a tour of NGLA with the "chief architect" of the course, Charles MacDonald. The article then went on to say that Sutherland had laid out a course in Carolina when he was over. Anyone know what course ?

I note that Pinehurst No 3 opened in 1910, and with the obvious connection between Ross and Sutherland...................or am I just jumping to conclusions ?

Niall he obviulsy got about.  He called on Suttons in Reading on his way back form laying out a new course in Italy in, I believe 1913.

I know he regualrly wrote for the leading papers but I've never read any of it.  Have you got some you could share.
Let's make GCA grate again!

That is very interesting. I knew he was in the States in 1910, but I had no idea he did any design work here. My guess would be something in or around Pinehurst too. There cannot be much doubt he would visit his former protege (and his brother).

Tony

I have a brief article he did for Golf Illustrated on NGLA when he got back from his trip but that mainly comprised 3 or 4 photos. He did say that he rated Myopia and Garden City as the two best courses he played over there and compares NGLA to them. Unfortunately don't have anything else of his but I believe his main column was with the Daily Mail (I think) if you can track them down.

Tom

I'll send you an email.

Interesting that by 1910 all of the best golf courses in the US were designed by amateurs for their own clubs, and that Sutherland concurred.

Thanks for the info Niall.
