Wish List
« on: June 28, 2011, 02:40:33 PM »
I just read Mike Malone's post on playing Oakmont soon, leaving only Shinnecock on his wish list.  I wonder how many people keep an informal or formal wish list of courses they want to play but haven't yet.
I started a few years ago to focus on one course that I wanted to play next.  It began with Oakmont, then Crystal Downs, and recently Chicago Golf, all of which I have now played.  Fisher's Island is next on my list--some invitations, but haven't gotten there yet.
It has always seemed fun to me to have a single next-great course objective, and I have been fortunate enough to have accompanished so many.

I would say the vast majority of GCA'ers have these type of lists.

High up on my list are...Royal Melbourne, Bandon, Prairie Dunes, RCD, and Kingsley.  To name, but a few.

Any course that has a short form on GCA.com (though I guess that means I have to exclude courses like Merion and Oakmont).

Top of the list:

NGLA
CD
PV
CPC

and a couple that don't have a short form:

Kingsley
Sagebrush

First, Jeff Evagues, if you can't spell it, they won't let you play it...the proper spelling is Shinny Coque...now Bart Simpson in on the chalkboard...

Second, my wish list is practical and accessible...it's the courses I am slated to play...this week has been Mohawk and Watertown, with Yale and Copake to follow. In two weeks, Kev Lynch, Chris Whitcomb and I head east again to play the Bethpage five, Union Vale, Tall Grass and Paramount. I know that there are more esteemed courses in the universe, but do I have anything to complain about? I think not.

Good luck to the brothers on their wish lists in 2011!

All Jamie has to do is win either the Am, Mid-Am or Publinx and he gets into the Masters. Then play well enough in the Masters and he's got the rest.  ;)

I have 1 left and it's the big one. A fellow gca'er recently suggested I move back to philly next year so that I could try to qualify for the philly open at the course but that's probably a little extreme. I am still thinking about it though!

I did not know that Cobb's was hosting the Philly Open next year.

I'm hopelessly stodgy. My "wish list" is mostly places I've been and wish to return to again.

Of the courses I've yet to play, probably The Old Course tops the list of ones that I will actively pursue opportunities for. That and Ganton are the main overseas courses that come to mind. I will also somehow make my way to Pinehurst #2 once the renovations are completed and grown in and the US Open has passed. Pebble Beach is the other that I can think of off the top of my head.

That said, there are dozens of courses I'd like very much play. All the usual suspects like Pine Valley, Augusta National, the big Long Island names would be wonderful adventures. And overseas there are numerous courses in Australia, Scotland, Ireland, England that I sure wouldn't pass up a chance to play. But I can't really say any of these are on a "wish list" as I don't anticipate making trips or cultivating contacts that would make that possible. Maybe a "dream list" but I'd save "wish list" for courses I realistically anticipate playing at some time over the next few decades and intend to pursue doing so actively. That's a pretty short list.

But I am definitely returning to Dornoch, Brora, Royal St. George's, Deal, Walton Heath (post modifications), The Ocean Course, etc., etc. among the courses I've played and haven't yet gotten near enough of. That's a bigger list than the never-played "wish list" has ever been. Funny how that works.

I just knocked Silloth off the list.  Ganton, Alwoodley (hopefully next month after many failed attempts), another crack at Sunny Old and Brancaster have been a long time on the list.  Little known Goswick has had my attention for many years - maybe when I am next in North Berwick I will ease back over the border.

In the States (the ones I tend to visit) Crystal Downs, Franklin Hills and Indianwood Old have been hangin' about for many years unplayed.  In the Carolinas Palmetto is a long time must and a newer addition to the list is Dormie Club.

I may start working on the Dutch/Belgian/French courses, but the one which grabs my attention most is Royal Zoute, mostly because it is near Bruges which I very much want to see.

My problem is that I am very reluctant to get on a plane specifically for golf or disappear on weekday nights as well.  Golf tends to be the secondary reason for going somewhere so its difficult to tick off the checklist.

Wheels are in motion (still a longshot) to share a game at Cypress Point with my wife on my 40th birthday, the day after Christmas.  Couldn't be tougher than the 2010 Giants winning the World Series?

That being said, I failed to get on Milwaukee the Friday before the Mashie.

Apart from the usual suspects across the country, just in NJ, Plainfield, ECCC, Riverton, and Montclair (all nines).  At the shore, Spring Lake, Deal, and Hollywood.
In PA, I would like to see Llanerch, Lancaster, Parkmont/Flynnmont, return to RGGC (last was 2004), return to .Schuylkill, Paxon, return to Lederach, and Glen Mills.

I always make a list in February of each year, of the 'attainables', which is, ACCC, and returning to Hidden Creek, Hominy Hill, Rutgers, Neshanic.

Someday, I think I'd like to have played every golf course in the great state of Connecticut.  Other than that, any course that would have me would be fine.

No, I'm probably just delusional.  ;D ;D :'(  Obviously all those would be awesome, but I doubt it will ever happen, no way. I've barely played in "competition" on Saturday mornings with the guys here recently.

Steve, you are correct indeed, I could win the Mid-Am or something and get in. I could do that in 2018 and check off (at least) 2, with the Masters and the US Open at Pebble; who knows where the Aussie Open will be that year....yeah, probably not going to happen.

I made that post just for fun really, though the courses can stay the same. Even though I've played Pebble and TOC, I'd NEVER pass up the chance to play either one of them again.

That's a very cool goal. How many courses are in CT? I know its a small state, but I'd have to think the total number is fairly significant. {and pretty sure this the most unique wish list yet}
