Classic Club Golf Course, Palm Desert, CA (Photos)
« on: June 26, 2011, 12:02:08 AM »
Classic Club is located in Palm Desert, CA.  It is on the north side of HWY 10, and if any of you are familiar with the desert, you know this is in the WIND ZONE.  It was part of the Bob Hope tournament from 2006-2008.  The reason they stopped going there was because it was too windy, and Phil Mickelson said he would stop playing in the Bob Hope if they continued playing there; well he stopped playing in it anyways when they switched to SilverRock.  Classic Club is a PGA tour Palmer design, meaning it was designed strictly in mind for the PGA tour event, just like SilverRock resort.   Classic Club is a very nice course if you catch it on a calm day, but if you don’t it can be a very long day.

Peter

Thanks for the pix.  I always enjoy seeing pix of desert courses in the hope of finding one or two which really appeal.  I am surprised at how much water is on the course.  Are you sure this is a desert.

Ciao

I played this bad boy in Feb. of 2010 (I think it was).  The dogleg holes with water on the side of the dogleg are what I remember as they were used so much.  In fact, I think water was used on 14 holes or something like that.  I had a fun time with a great group of guys, but this is simply too much water for me.

It looks awfully green for a desert courses, I see no waste areas or rock piles.   Lots of water!

It also doesn't look wide enough in many places for high winds.   Does it get as windy here as at Desert Dunes?   :o

I played a course in the wind belt many, many years ago and this has a similar feel to it. The course I played had a clubhouse with a sort of  Moroccan motif; does anyone remember its name?

Mr. Huntley you played Desert Dunes.  Desert Dunes is about 10 miles before Classic Club on HWY 10 also.  Desert Dunes is a better course than Classic Club.

And to answer Mr. McBride question, this is in the Wind Tunnel so it gets just as windy as Desert Dunes.  Any course that is just off HWY 10 is right in the middle of the wind tunnel.  Desert Dunes, Classic Club, Terra Lago, Shadow Hills, Del Webb, avoid this courses from the months of April and May because you will most likely catch it in a 35+mph wind.

You had to figure that Desert Dunes was going to be a bit windy, with a 1000-turbine wind farm a mile off to the west!
