How Many Courses Have You Played?
« on: January 22, 2002, 09:34:27 AM »
I keep a list of all the courses I have played on a computer file, and I'm wondering how many of you do the same.  I'm up to 325 courses, 20 of the world top 100, and 16 of the US top 100 (going by Golf Magazine listings).  I realize that I have only scratched the surface of what's out there, and I have so much great golf yet to see!

From this group it would really be interesting to know:  How many golf courses have you played?

Not trying to get anyone to pull rank on anybody, but I'm sure there are members of this group who have played a ton of courses in their days...

Thanks--CB

Not that I'm an anal-retentive engineer or anything, but here are my stats (not impressive by any means)...

52-Illinois
28-Florida
14-Missouri
11-Indiana
10-Scotland
09-Ohio
08-Hawaii
08-Iowa
05-North Carolina
04-California
04-Wisconsin
03-Minnesota
03-New York
03-Tennessee
02-Georgia
02-South Carolina
02-Texas
01-Massachusetts
01-Michigan

In total, 170 different courses including a number of Top100 (insert your favorite list here) courses.  My computer list originated due to the logo ball collection I have amassed...one from every course I've played in my life since starting golf at the age of 10.  I just wish EVERY course HAD logo balls!  ::)

I cannot compete with legends such as Bob McCoy (world's top 100 courses in 100 days) or Terry Inslee (plays over 200 different courses per year).

However, I have played over 1,000 courses, including Golf Magazine's World Top 100, Golf Magazines's Top 100 US, Golf Digest's Top 100 US and Golfweek's Top 100 Classical and Modern.

I don't know how many courses I've played (probably 200), but the list of courses I want to play from what I've been reading here the last 6 months is going to exceed that soon. One  of the best things about this site is that I don't have to waste my time playing courses that are hyped by the golf media only to be disappointed. Last week I played Barona Creek near San Diego which is spoken highly of here and it was an absolute joy to play. Of newer courses it is up there with Bandon Dunes, Pac Dunes, Stevinson Ranch for great design, strategic interest, and unrelenting fun that tests every aspect of your game.

2001 was a good year for me.  I got 70+ new courses in over 12 months.  It included Pebble, Bandon, Pac Dunes, Cruden Bay, Loch Lomond, Western Gailes, Carnoustie, PGA West, Saddle Creek, Pumpkin Ridge (both courses), Astoria CC, and many others.  Not too bad....

Can you enlighten us as to the 10 courses you have played?  I'm guessing NGLA, Pine Valley, Merion and the 7 different versions of Gulph Mills, from Ross through Maxwell, Jones, etc. up to Fazio.  Am I close?

All the best

More than any sane human being should ever attempt.  I also have a scorecard from each one, a habit I started at the ripe age of 13, 30 years ago.

I'm now at 621, in 25 states and 4 countries.  As a look to 2002, I'm hoping to have my most enjoyable year yet in terms of golf travel.

I have a friend in upstate PA who was at 852 when I last spoke to him around Thanksgiving, and another friend in NJ who has played every course in the state, 99 of the top 100, and about 660 altogether.

The second gentleman is retired, so I can understand that one.  The first fellow is only 39, so who knows what the hell he's doing! ;)

Interesting sping.  My top 5 "new" are, in order:

Shinnecock
Merion
Olympic (Lake)
NGLA
Applebrook (in a close call over Bandon Dunes, Pacific Duens and Kingsbarns--the top 4 are in a class by themselves).

I mention that merely because, well, I'm reading these lists, and.........

I'm kinda fearful what might happen here when Huckaby shows up.....

hmmm...2001 wasn't, personally, a great year for new visits to courses in terms of numbers vistited. Nevertheless, I saw a few good ones.
that being said here goes:

Camargo
Gulph Mills
Misquamicut
World Woods (PB)
Flourtown

Dan Kelly - I'm avoiding this one.  No offense to those who've posted already, but it seems too much like gloating to me.  My list is similar to Rich's anyway re best new ones in 2001, and as for total courses played, I've never kept track and trying to recount now after 30+ years at this game is impossible.

Cheers!

TH

ps - VERY cool to see Tom Paul listed Fernandina Muni anyway... I played that course on my honeymoon!

The number is probably just south of 300 with between 45 and 50 of the top 100 (Depending on who's list).

Best five courses played for the FIRST time this year.

1.  Southern Hills
2.  Praire Dunes
3.  Pasatiempo
4.  Riviera C.C.
5.  Whispering Pines

And I took full blame then, and retain such now.  My utter ignorance in not trumpeting a course I have never seen remains inexcusable.
