Randy Haag Olympic Lake Course Preview
« on: June 20, 2011, 11:30:51 PM »
I have only watched the first of this series of videos but I thought others might be interested in getting a video tour of the course from a very good player.  My primary reaction thus far is that I would shoot a million on this course.

Great way to (p)review playing OC Lake despite the amateur quality of video. Reminded me of my round there, except for all the deep rough Haag conveniently was not in. Interesting take on 3rd hole where he suggests laying up to the par 3, ala Casper, and the strategy of playing 3 wood off the tee on 16.

I would definitely review his recommendations before teeing it up again there. It will be interesting to compare Haag's notes with Johnny Miller's next year on how to play Olympic.

Jason -

I started a thread on this same topic 2 days ago! ;)

http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,48646.0.html

If anyone wants to follow the California State Amateur, being played this week at the OC, here is a link:

http://www.ncga.org/2011/06/20/100th-california-state-amateur-championship/

In the first day of qualifying, scores on the Lake Course averaged roughly 2 shots more than scores on the Ocean Course, roughly 76 vs. 74.

No problem. By the way, I usually shoot a million and one when I play the Lake. ;)

I usually want to shoot myself afterwards. It's a relentless slog that a mid capper has no business on.

Lake gets all the attention as it should given its role in competitive golf. I would suggest a mid or high( my case) will have a better experience on Ocean and still get the experience of playing Olympic. Admittedly not the same course the Open Cal Am and others are played on but Ocean is a fun course IMHO

Ocean is in no way an easy course but better suited I feel to the average golfers game. Note they serve those famous O club hamburgers on Ocean as well!!

Are spectators allowed at the Cal State Amateur tournament at Olympic Lake? Tickets required? Can't find info on the NCGA web site. Would like to get out and see the changes made to the course.

There should not be any problem at all if you want to go out to the OC to watch the Cal State Am. No tickets are required. Just be aware the matches start early in the morning (7:30am, I think) Wednesday through Saturday. I believe the semifinals will start at 1:00pm on Friday and the 2nd 18 holes of the finals will start around noon on Saturday.

If you click on this link and scroll down to "Schedule," you will find the starting times each day for the matches:

Thank you David.  I will try to find some time in the next few days to get over there and check things out.

I live ten minutes from the course but am not (yet) a member.  Haven't seen the Lake course since the 2007 US Amateur so I am very interested to see what they have done to it in preparation for the 2012 Open.

And yet he would get waxed by any touring pro.  Truly most of us have no concept of how good the top players are.

FWIW the course is not set up hard this week in terms of length, rough, or green speeds. It's still plenty hard of course but not similar to what you will see next June.

Despite being 26 years older than anyone else who qualified for the 32 matchplay spots, Randy Haag has made it through to the quarter-finals. A little (or in this case, a lot of) home course knowledge never hurts.

Edit, word is that the setup was easy for stroke play but the tees have been moved waaaay back, greens hardened, hole locations strengthened for match play. So it's playing very tough now. I'll be out there watching tomorrow and/or Sunday.

If you are going out on Sunday, you will be watching hacks like me ... the 36-hole final is Saturday ... (Quarters and Semis on Friday)

Just received this update e-mail

Olympic Club member, and perennial amateurgolf.com Tournament Series Player-of-the-Year Randy Haag, at a spry age 52 continues his solid play, ousting medalist Philip Chian this morning. He plays Fresno State Player (and 2010 US Amateur Semifinalist) Bhavik Patel.

AMAZING  go Randy

Bhavik Patel, a senior-to-be at Fresno State, won the Cal State Amateur today 8&6 over Kevin Wnetworth.

Curious to see how the 7th and 8th go over.

Haag didn't like the old 7th.  In the member meeting a few years ago he got up in front of the membership and said other players playing in the US Amateur said it was a joke.  The decision to change the holes was already made but his comments didn't help.  As far as I know, Haag has never served on a green committee at any of the clubs he has belonged.

Did he say why?  Watching from the gallery of the Tour Championship in 1993 and 1994, I thought the old 7th was fantastic.

Well, first, he didn't say that.  His comments were limited to the 8th hole.  But there is no Youtube of the meeting so you'll have to trust me on that.  And second, the current 7th is a fantastic hole.  A whopping 18 yards longer than the old version, and still less than 300 yards as a par 4.  Looks the same from the tee.  Some in the Cal Amateur elected to bust driver off the tee, and others hit hybrid or iron to lay up for a wedge approach.  The hole played the same as before....Nick Price hit the green in 1994 and others over the years have played for position off the tee.

And two tiers instead of the gimmicky 3-tier old version, where if you landed on the correct tier you had a short birdie putt, instead of the current two tiers where a putt has more interest.

And the three tiers of "old" wasn't that old.  Nixon in the White House.  Not Woodrow Wilson.

I would wager cash money that there is no course on either coast or in between that is playing firmer or faster than the Lake currently tee to green.  Rough is low and playable.  Tree clearing continues with pines recently removed throughout.
