St Georges Golf & CC - WOW!
« on: June 17, 2011, 12:26:59 AM »
I had the good fortune to play St Georges Golf & CC today and what a treat it was! Designed by Devereux Emmet (who was a member and club champion) St Georges offers a beautifully open and rolling playing field. The bunkering on this course deserves special notice... this is a course with a bunkering scheme that would make Sean Arble dance for joy. Each bunker has a purpose and the course would be lessened if any were removed. Actually, the club is considering replacing a couple that were grassed over years ago.

Great turf, nearly perfect greens, and a routing that flows as smoothly as silk with greens and tees spaced only a few paces apart in most cases.

St Georges is a truly outstanding course and I had never heard of it before a week ago. It amazes me how many outstanding courses there are in the US northeast that most golfers don't know anything about... similar to the abundance of fine courses in England that are unknown to most Americans.

Mike,
I agree that the course is every bit as good as you suggest.

Here are some photos and discussions from Autumn 2010:

It is a pretty neat place.

Last fall when I was there my group had a couple of cameras and we started on the third hole.  Some of the pics later on the back nine came out very well.  But we ran out of light for holes 1 and 2, hence the photo album starts off rather dark.

I would echo the thoughts of the previous posters. The wonderful collection of par 3`s make you reach for a range of clubs on holes that are between 125 and 200 yards in length and are defended by some very cool bunkers and runoffs. Emmet also gives you some centerline bunkers that make you think on the par 5`s instead of just swinging away. There are plenty of humps and bumps and natural mounding to give each hole a distinct flavor. The deck and patio outside the grill give you a panoramic view of the treat that awaits you. I guess this place stays under the radar with all the heavy weights out on the island and if I were a member that is just the way I would like it.

...St Georges offers a beautifully open and rolling playing field...

Mike,

Isn't this part about 80% of the battle anyway?

At least for me any course to which that comment can be applied is a fine one no matter whether the other details put it in the "Great" category or not.

I'm all about spending a day on a beautifully open and rolling playing field. If I've got some golf clubs with me, even better. 8)

The playing field coment is so appropo with the tree removal project once can see virtually the whole course from the clubhouse.

On a seperate note playing with you guys was almost as much fun as a breastfeeding class!

I second Mike's comments on what a wonderful course St George's is.  Our host was fantastic, gracious and beaming with enthusiam for his baby.

The adjectives repeated over and over were "intimate", "fun"', and "a course you could play every day without being bored.". There are many mini loops for members to enjoy.  The routing definitely eases you in, and for match play, has great holes at the end to separate competitors.  The green at 17,mthe shortest Par 3, is phenomanal, with a panoramic view of many holes, and a treacherous view of the pin when set in front of the false front leading to purgatory.

Great course, great routing, great fun.

You know, David, Tim had the perfect comment about St Georges:  if the course were located anywhere other than Long Island it would get much more recognition. It's similar to the situation with the New Course in St Andrews... if it were not adjacent to The Old it would be more highly regarded. Compared to the "Big Boys" on Long Island I would guess St Georges is considered a "second tier" course, but that would be an unfair designation as St Georges can hold its on against most. Is it a "championship" course? No... they're not going to hold a competition there for the flat-bellies. But, for the rest of us, it's about all we could ever need or want.

I'm not sure how to take that!

Has it been so long since you've breastfed that you've forgotten how?

Mike`s last sentence says it all as I would have a smile painted on my face every time I rolled up the St. Georges driveway. Hard to express just how fun this golf course is and the buffet was 5 star to boot. :)
