WaPo Shout Out for Devereux Emmet
« on: June 14, 2011, 02:50:14 PM »
The Washington Post has this article talking about Devereux Emmet and his vanished influence on Congressional.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/golf/originally-designed-by-devereux-emmet-congressional-has-undergone-many-changes-over-the-years/2011/06/07/AG9L4kTH_story.html

(Makes it kind of cool to for me to be playing St George's, Emmet's home course, the day the US Open tees it off at Congressional, one of his lost courses!)
The trouble with modern equipment and distance—and I don't see anyone pointing this out—is that it robs from the player's experience. - Mickey Wright

Do we have any old aerials and pictures of what the course used to look like?

Thanks,
Mark

Mark, if you go to historicaerials.com and find the golf course, I think you can go as early as about 1941 or 1945-so, you can see positioning of the greens, fairways, and other hazards at that point in time.

What is interesting is when you do a fade to, say, 2002 or as recent to the last Open, you can see where greens have been moved, tees shifted, fairways narrowed, etc.  It's a fun exercise.

“Back in those days, you didn’t really move a lot of earth,” Jones said of Emmet’s era. “We’re able to do a lot more shaping.”

Just because I can own a gun (and if I did), doesn't mean I could go around shooting people...does it?

Very good aerial photos from 1940 can be seen on the USGA Museum's Architecture Archive web page.
