3 days...
« on: June 07, 2011, 10:25:44 PM »
I am about to go on what will likely be the best golf trip of my life to date. It's just 3 days, but here's the agenda:

Thursday am: NGLA
Thursday pm: Shinnecock
Friday: 36 at GCGC
Saturday: Winged Foot West

I am tempted to drive to make sure the clubs arrive, but I'm impatient.

In any event, what's the best short golf trip you've done...where and why?

Every trip to Ballyneal and every trip to Bandon.  Never get tired of it.

72 in a day Trevor??? You must be younger than I am. I am worried about 36 in 1 day on the Hills of Eastern Long Island in 90+ weather!

I walked the last 36 alone with a bottle of cutty...thank god the shuttle from 13 green to 14 tee at Bandon Trails was still there when I came through at around 7!

Did three days at Koehler once 18+36+18...that was nice!
Spent three days at Bandon-18+36+18

I guess 3 days is the end of short...four gets you nearer the week.

A couple of good ones so far this year...

Day 1: LA North/LA South/Bel Air
Day 2: Riviera

Day 1: Indian Creek
Day 2: Calusa Pines
Day 3: Seminole

Tough to beat either of those during the cold weather months.

My opportunity to play Pine Valley came on a weekend that I couldn't stay long--so I played it and Lancaster CC and flew back to New Mexico.

I thought I'd have more to add--but most of my best trips have been at least four days. Hiwan, Sanctuary, and Ballyneal was a fun short one too.

I'm not "experienced" enough to pull 3 days better than that. ;D

Bill - it's nice of you to ask us about our best 3 days, but screw that: you've got one heck of an outstandingly amazing three days coming up, and I'd much rather hear about your thoughts and expectations heading into them -- hour by hour even. Something like:

Tuesday 11 pm: "I'm scared. I'm afraid I'm in a dream. Where's that f-cking spinning top when you need it"

Tuesday Midnight: "I just cut myself shaving and it hurt like hell. Great news!!"

Wednesday 9:00: "If I think about teeing off at Shinnecock it feels like Im gonna puke on my shoes"...

Anyway, congrats. All the best.  Please report back on the experience.

Peter

Bill,

Not to alarm you, but I know a GCAer (not me) who is on a very similar trip as we speak and played the first three days without his clubs thanks to Jet Blue.

As someone who takes multiple 3-day golf trips a year, I don't find it to be that unusal. I'm sure many of us would fly cross country to play just one of those courses on your itinerary.

The BUDA matches tend to be 3 days and are really terrific golf trips.  However, I suspect this question isn't about the cameraderie and craic but rather about the courses.

I just recently played MPCC Shore, CPC and Lawsonia on consecutive days and they were all pretty good!
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

I would play any of the three-day bangers mentioned here with cue tips, so ignore the Jet Blue comment from the rabble.

Jim, I am glad I read that post after waking up! I plan to arrive at the airport early and will press the attendant call button if I don't see them load. I must admit, I was driving pretty passively for a Detroiter yesterday.

I am most excited about the days 1 and 3 since I have not played any of those courses and have learned so much about them since discovering this site. I have played many great designs, but this is going to be different. Fortunately, I have a friend at GCGC so I have played there several times - in fact it was the initial reason for the trip. The other three were added through various connections the guy I am going with and I had. We had a lot of other choices out in the Hamptons, but decided to go with the two we wanted to see most.

We thought about adding another day for some other Metro clubs, but this seems like a good bit of golf without exhausting ourselves, our wives and our wallets. Next year, we will do it again and spend a few more days out in the Hamptons.

The hardest part of the trip? Staying at Piping Rock and not being able to play because it's the weekend of their Invitational!

A couple of fun ones I've done so far this year:

In February I did a Fri-Sun,

Tobacco Road
Southern Pines (36)
Dormie Club

and last weekend did a Sat-Sun

Gulph Mills
Merion East

I agree with many of the  other posters that at least on this side of the Atlantic, it's tough to beat Bandon for 4-5 days

Trevor - that sounds expensive.

So far this year Royal Troon, Glasgow Gailes & 36 at Prestwick or Wairakei, Kinloch & Paraparaumu Beach or RM West, Kingston Heath & RM Composite. A couple more good'uns to come later in the year.

Is GCA'er Michael Goldstein the first to sleep in car, play National/Shinnecock and sleep in car??

were the courses empty when you played?  regardless of fitness, those must have been 3 hour rounds

I don't do short golf trips outside of Oregon except for GCA events. The one exception was fly, play Oakmont, fly back.
My trips start generally start wiith an agenda of five or so courses. Then I research through books (and now GCA) and it balloons to twenty +,  and then scales back to a dozen or so.

But I am doing 36 a day for 3 days at Sagebrush next week.
