Weyhill restoration
« on: June 06, 2011, 03:07:22 PM »
After being closed all last year, the Weyhill Course at Saucon Valley has just re-opened and I have to say that the changes made by Tom Marzolf and Medalist are fantastic. I have always felt that this is one of the coolest inland sites I have ever played on, and it just became SO much better!

Before, Hole 15. 375 yards from the Whites, 420 from the Blues. Downhill tee shot, significant uphill second shot (with old quarry on the left and below the fence on the right.) They key to this hole remains getting the ball in the fairway so you avoid an uphill mid iron shot from the rough. But with the traps on the bottom and tall fescus on the hill, it was an almost impossible shot if you failed to reach the green.

the interviewer asked beck how he felt "being the bob dylan of the 90's" and beck quitely responded "i actually feel more like the bon jovi of the 60's"

Bill,

Thanks for the update and for posting the pictures.

I'm going to make some plans to get over there very soon to see them firsthand.    Great to see the club is investing in continual course improvements.

Bill,

Did you find any of the new greens to be "less interesting" post restoration?

On the contray, I found the greens to be far more "interesting" and there are FAR more pinnable locations on just about every green. If you know the course, some greens had such severe slopes that entire sections were unpinnable, like the back of Hole 13, where a missed uphill putt would roll back down a good six feet below the hole.  I tried to blow up a photo of the old second green below. Notice the high back-right mound on the green. I guess you could say it was "interesting" but it was useless as a pin location:

Every green was re-built to USGA spec and they really are fabulous. Obviously, they are not rolling and cutting as aggressively this year until the turf matures, but I see so many more possible hole locations, and this will have a corresponding effect on how I play certain holes.

Bill,

Great to hear how happy you guys are with Mr. Marzolf.  I've been working with Tom a little over a year now and our renovation begins next month.  We hope to be finished by this time next year.  I have spoken with with many Super's who have worked with Tom and all had tremendous things to say about him.
