NLE Course you're most sorry to have missed....
« on: May 31, 2011, 09:11:18 AM »
My caddy yesterday was relating how he used to work at High Pointe and telling stories about the course and how he got to play a few holes with Anthony Kim.  Upon reflection this led to a sense of melancholy as I never got to play the course.  Perhaps it wasn't the greatest course in history, although it seems to have been an important stepping stone in the modern minimalist movement.  Having spent a fair amount of time in Northern Michigan and never having met a Doak course I didn't like (card-carrying Buttboy), makes this a course I haven't seen that I really wish I had.  Sure there are others that would have been great to see, the original Lido being the obvious choice, but what NLE courses that you have some personal connection or likely affinity to which you never got to play are you most sorry to have missed?

Beachtree would have to be one of them.

I wish I had gotten a chance to play the golf course situated where Gilson Park in Wilmette now sits and used the building that houses Michigan Shores Club as the clubhouse.

The Lido

A close second is East Lake No. 2.

Edit - Misunderstood the question. I'll go with East Lake No. 2.

After Lido it would be Hob Nob Hill (aka Fulton Estate Course), a Devereux Emmet creation located  in Salisbury, Ct that closed during WW2.  About half the existing hole corridors are still there.

First on the list must be the Lido. Locally, the original Indian Spring - not Flynn's ISII or Gordon's recently closed IS III. Ross's course lasted only 20 years but was recognized as the finest in the area.

In July I will be riding two stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity, including Mont Ventoux for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Having read a good bit about NLE courses recently, I really wish I could have played Lido.

Is there anyone who would not pick Lido as number 1?

But to answer the question, Alderwood Country Club in Portland, host of the 1937 US Amateur and one of A.V. Macan's finest courses.

Mark Pearce introduces an interesting thought, courses that are still in existence but have been changed so much that they barely resemble their original design.  While Shaughnessy in Vancouver does not quite fit that category, I would love to have seen it when it had its original greens.

Dale,

What about Shaughnessy in its old location?  Do you know much about that one?

I would take Jericho in Vancouver.  Played lots of rugby down there, and my wife's grandfather was a member.

In no particular order...

- St. Andre
- Sharp Park
- Lido
- Augusta

Will, I don't know too much about Shaughnessy Heights but it was originally built before Macan and therefore before any real architect was active in our area.  I believe Macan did work on it later.  It would be really interesting to play both old Shaughnessy and Jericho.  I think I have read Jericho was very highly thought of in its day.

Beechtree was worth the visit, and I think High Pointe will be back one day.

Slag,

As in the original.  Much like Augusta in that respect.  The sad part is contrary to belief ... much of Sharp is still there (even some of the ocean holes).  Just very softened (or hidden for a couple of the ocean holes).

Dave F.,

Good call on Timber Pointe.  Still there, but not exactly the same.

Dave H.,

Agreed on the Ocean course at the O Club.

I would've loved to have seen the original Indian Spring by Donald Ross.  We really don't have much in the way of great architecture in DC and it would've been fun to play it.

Blue Heron Pines-East.  I really like BHP-West, and most people, inside and outside of the treehouse, I have spoken to say East was better-more compelling architecture.
Obviously, I have no basis for comparison.  I recall seeing notices of this closing sometime around the end of 2006 or 2007, but never made it down to Atlantic County to play it.  (Now, I live 15 mins away and pass it daily).

Ashbourne was another missed opportunity in '06-'08, when I lived a few miles up the road in Montco.  And, I could have played with Bausch and Harris.

I was happy to have the opportunity to play Beechtree about once a year from 2004-2007.

1. The Lasker course in Lake Forest, Illinois -- on which my in-laws' house sits now. Reputedly a great course.

2. The Burton course in Deephaven, Minnesota. A private, estate course about which I know NOTHING -- except that I could have driven to the edge of it from the home in which I spent a good part of my youth.

3. Foulpointe, Madagascar.

I belong to The CC at Woodmore which is Prince George's CC in a new location.  The old course was reputed to have been an excellent old Donald Ross course.  Wish I had seen it.

Sean - Good call on the original Princes.

When I played Princes last September, I learned that half the original course, the current "Himalayas" nine, is no longer part of the championship course.

Our host, Jamie Barber, walked me out to the hole which is now #9 Himalayas.   The dominant feature of this dogleg left par 5 is the high sand ridge which had to be carried in those days to reach the green in two shots.  In 1932 Gene Sarazen took on the carry with his brassie every round (4x in two days) and racked up 3 birdies and an eagle, essentially winning the Open Championship on that one hole.   It was very cool to see the hole today, although it's been shortened into a par 4 and you no longer carry the dune.   At least you could see the ridge!

Apache Stronghold would be my favorite Doak course if it was maintained properly.
