Most fun course you've played
« on: May 26, 2011, 05:23:34 PM »
I got to thinking, if I had to play one course only, what course did I have the most fun on? Enjoyed the shot making, architecture, ambiance, scenery, town...everything considered.

For me, it has to be Pebble Beach. I played there 23 years in a row, it was always a 7 day trip, starting in SF, at Olympic or SFGC, then Pasitempo, Pebble Beach everyday in the mornings unless we could get on CPC, Spyglass once each trip, so 27 holes at Pebble for 4 or 5 days, luch at the 19th hole outside, Cheeseburgers with grilled onions, well done french fries with grilled onions and a bottle of Dom Perigmon.

We teed off at 8 am everyday so we could play fast, our caddies were "foot" and "dog" if they were sober and showed up. My fondestest memories. My dad took me there first, then it was a guys trip and later on it was a couples trip. Last time there was 1993 when we started renting for winters in Florida.

Loved the 17 mile drive, never got over the beauty of the tree formations, the seals, the deer on Spyglass, the iceplant, the 2nd shot on 8, the 16 th at CPC...the best.

What say you yours?
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

I have loved every trip to Bandon, but Sagebrush might well be more fun.  With so few people out there, it kind of feels like a playground for golfers.

I loved the pre-fancy clubhouse ar Cruden Bay. The big clubhouse hurts the atmosphere for me. I'd be tempted to say Royal Dornoch, but there are days when it gets a little too crowded for my tastes. I think I'm gonna stay within the U.S. of A. and go with Cypress Point. It has everything, including a membership that doesn't fill up the tee sheet. It would be a gas to really get to know Cypress Point.

I also had this dream of being the Archie Baird of Bandon Dunes.

Cheers,

Honestly?

Possibly MPCC Shore. Great "fun" golf course.

All are great choices, maybe not Pebble, I could not have much fun knowing how much those trips would have been costing!

In 1995 I spent 1 week at Macrahanish, playing 18 one day and 36 the next.  I was with my wife and 3 friends and the course, the setting and the friends all made it the most fun I have had playing golf.

The course is not the hardest, or perhaps the best course I have played, but I have always thought of it as the most fun course.

I love a golf course where you can aim away from the flag and still get the ball close to the hole. Dornoch, Pac Dunes, Ballyneal and Barnbougle all fit the bill, but I really do still relish any and every round at Rustic Canyon!

The Old Course!!!

I change my vote to Crail Balcomie.  TOC was great, but the course AND the company were great at Balcomie.

Ross course at French Lick.  Crazy, fun greens, manageable distances and difficulty.  I've only played there once but the round was one fun shot after another.

Mac - Crail is a great suggestion. Not the best course by far but a ton of fun. However I have to go with Ballyneal.

I'm in the Kingsley Camp.  I love the remoteness, the peacefulness, the fun and quirk, the attitude of the club, the treatment from the staff, walking the course, I can go on and on.

No massive ocean or lake views.  No panoramic mountain vistas.  Just a damn fun place to spend a day.

Kapalua Plantation-unbelievable views everytime you look up and those great wide fairways that roll for days are so much fun to drive with the wind at your back.

Also Lake Chabot in the Oakland Hills, elevated teeshots for days and great views of the bay on a clear day. Finish with a 660 yd par 6 all down hill. Now that's fun.

Miss Congeniality award goes to Clear Creek Tahoe, the last round of the Kings Putter. Fun pretty course with a bunch of great guys.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

It was close, but given the criteria Cary listed, I'll cast another vote for North Berwick.  In addition to the high fun factor, it scores high in all of the other categories as well.

I have to go with Tobacco Road. It was not the best course I have played, but 36 holes there one day was great. I hit so many shots, especially with hybrids, that were in the air for a while and it was just a terrifying time, wondering if it was long, short, correct side of the ridge, good, or dead. There are a number of par 5 second shots where you have to decide what angle to play, how much to cut off, and I loved it. I know that I could play there often and enjoy it every time.

Bulls Bay probably wins it for me.  Huge fairways, so you can even have fun and feel like you have a chance on most holes if you're not hitting the ball well off the tee.

The most fun courses are also my favorite courses.....The Old Course (ground game), Ballyneal (ground game), and Tobacco Road (risk-reward).

The opposite of that is....Baltusrol, Congressional, and East Lake.
