Memorable First Tees
« on: May 26, 2011, 12:06:55 PM »
This is different than memorable first tee shots like say Machrihanish.  It is more about the setting than the shot.  One that I always remember is the first tee at Royal Aberdeen where the small tee is about a club length from the grill room window and you feel like the denizens of the bar are on the tee with you.   Are there other places where the setting of the tee itself makes it memorable more than the golf shot presented?

St Andrews #1 of course. Riviera right there off the pro shop and Bel Air (though #10 more so). Still some of the most memorable.

Merion #1 because of the fear of hitting into the lunch guests.

Inverness #1 because of it being shared with #10 and being right in front of the golf shop and clubhouse.  Many eyes on you.

Inverness has a unique setup for sure.

Fear of hitting into the lunch guests?  That's pretty funny!  But yes, Merion's first tee is hard to forget.

The back tee at Sutton Bay No. 1 has to be one of the coolest tee pads on Earth.

Look at me, Ma! I'm on top of the world!

And then, on 18 tee, you're looking down on it!

I would say CPC, even though its pretty cliche.  It really is a butt pucker-er with:

1) Everyone watching
2) Knowing you're about to tee off on an epic journey.
3) Trying not to hit it on the range where your ball will likely be lost.
4) And hoping you don't foozle one on the road and break a window.

It has to be Bethpage Black.  With all the locals standing around making comments about every bad tee shot, it was very memorable.  I would agree with Merion, CPC, and St. Andrews, and would also add Royal County Down.

I put Royal County Down number 1 on my all time course list, but I would not have thought to include the first tee on this list.  What am I missing?

Agreed.  What is memorable about the first tee, other than it is the first tee at RCD?

I'm playing Inverness next week, now you have me worried.

I've always liked the setting of the first tee at Crystal Downs with a view of almost the entire front nine and Crystal Lake.

This is not the best picture, but the first tee at Atlantic City CC is part of the putting green.  Tee is located to the far right of the picture toward the pond.

At the Country Club of Columbus (a Ross in Columbus, GA) both the first and tenth tees are extensions of the putting green). During the Southeastern Am the tee times are every 10 minutes on the 10 off the 1st tee but every 10 minutes on the 5 off the 10th tee because the tees are so close together. Both tees are mowed at fairway height. This is no big deal on the 1st tee because you are hitting driver but it was a little off putting to my pysche on the 10th because you are laying up with an iron. I have never seen another teeing ground like this.

BTW, CCC is a tremendously fun, old school Ross course.

In terms of setting, it doesn't get much better than the 1st hole of the St. Laurent nine at Le Manoir Richelieu in Quebec. After a 10 minute, one mile cart ride up the mountain you arrive to the view below. I live and have traveled all across Canada and I can say the Charlevoix area is probably my favorite.

Although you can tell there is a big elevation change from the photo, the hole falls around 125 ft to the green.

I second Lester re: Old White.

If memorable doesn't have to mean great, I suggest the first tee at Holston Valley Golf Course in Bristol, Tennessee.  The course is long closed but the "back" tee on the first (a 380ish yard par five) required a steep takeaway, so as not to hit whatever automobile was parked immediately behind it.  The tee was literally cut right off the gravel parking lot.  About half the cars in the lot were for sale at any given time (since a "dealership" also ran out of the clubhouse).  They were usually Monte Carlos or Chevelles or other similarly awesome cars.

The challenge on some short par fives is abundant trouble or contour.  On this one, however, it was trying not to smash a grill or hood ornament on your practice swing.

Steve...I agree, CCC is a pretty darn cool course that flies under the radar.  And the first tee, putting green, area is pretty cool.

Sand Hills deserves mention.  Great hole.  Great landscape.  Really neat.

Cuscowilla is neat with that big ol' orange bunker out there.

Yeamans Hall...what a cool vibe simply being there.

Inwood with Manhattan in the background.

Does Secession deserves mention here?  Holy cow, what a first hole!

Freakin' Tobacco Road.  Ugh!
