Phoenix moves to sever ties with Papago Golf Course operator
Council to mull settlement deal as city looks for new course manager

 by Lynh Bui - May. 17, 2011 12:00 AM
The Arizona Republic

Phoenix will start looking for a new company to run Papago Golf Course as it plans to sever ties with the current manager.

The Phoenix City Council on Wednesday will consider a settlement agreement with the Arizona Golf Foundation that would remove the non-profit's management arm from running the course and require the group to halt bankruptcy proceedings.

Neither Phoenix nor the AGF will pay for the walk-away settlement, and an official with the Parks and Recreation Department says it will allow the city to move on with restoring the course and rebuilding the clubhouse torn down in 2008.

If I'm a golf course management company that was considering coming into this mess, why would I ever agree to pay for a clubhouse? Maybe they should hire the Colorado Golf Association, which built CommonGround and is doing just fine after 2-3 years with a small but serviceable "temporary" clubhouse, to consult.

Especially those from "ShrillAndPersonal,"  - who I assume was one of those behind the "Save Papago Golf" effort that arose at the time the AGA deal with the city was announced.
