A Way OT question for British footie fans.....
« on: May 14, 2011, 12:14:47 PM »
......can someone tell me why the FA Cup Final was broadcast on ESPN today? I would have thought it would have been on BBC or Sky Sports for sure. Has ESPN been broadcasting Premiership football all season long?

David, it is generally on Fox soccer channel or ESPN2. BBC never has any football. Don't know why or how but that is the case normally. Thanks.

Fox currently has the US rights to the Champions League. They've been inconsistent about showing games, but surely they'll show the final. It could be on Fox Soccer, Fox Sports, or any of the many regional channels. Likely it will be on many of these channels.

Dean & Andy -

I am interested in what channels these events are/will be broadcast in the UK not the USA.

ITV and Sky share the rights in the UK and both will be showing the final. Being at Wembley and having Manchester playing, I don't think it'll be possible to miss it though!

David,

The FA Cup Final remains one of the "crown jewels", sporting events that, by statute, must be available to broadcast by terrestrial transmission, free to air.  That means, in reality, BBC or ITV and, for the past few years, ITV h the contract.  It's also broadcast on Sky.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Wasn't the FA Cup Final broadcast yesterday on ESPN in the UK?

The FA Cup Final was broadcasted to the UK by ESPN.

And to England by ITV.

In Scotland we got the Kevin Costner Film, 13 Days !

Hence, I was in the pub watching it  :P

Congrats Man City. Fox soccer channel has become a favorite of mine. I'll be watching Spurs v. Liverpool today.

David,

My apologies, I didn't realise it had gone from Sky to ESPN.  I tend to watch the terrestrial broadcast on principal and, in any case didn't see the game at all yesterday as I was en route to your home town!

Thomas - best question since I heard an American ask what time the one o'clock gun is fired each day at Edinburgh castle.

it was a rhethorical question. it wasnt meant to be answered but to express my disbelief that a team as bad as stoke could make it to the final.

You'll have to excuse Chappers if he's a bit narky - he's facing at least one season of away games at Scunthorpe, Ipswich and Preston. ;D

Stoke are not a bad team and are currently 9th in the Premier League.  In fact there are really only a few "bad" teams in the Premier League, just look at the EPL teams performance in Europe.  Even Fulham have made the Europa league final.  In fact given Man City are already in the champions league Stoke should get the FA cup Europa league spot.  Much worse teams like the 97 Middlesbrough side and 10 Portsmouth team have managed to get to the final the same season they were relegated.

Scott - I've a half share in a Brighton season ticket for 2011-2012, for the Seagulls trips to PNE and the Tractor Boys are the big time!!

Tom - only pulling your leg, I was once asked by another American (it's always a yank) at Trooping the Colour if it happened every Saturday. That was after he'd see The Mall lined with troops and cops, and a Sovereigns Escort of the Household Cavalary escort The Queen who was still riding side saddle in those days.  ::)

Stoke in the final is the glory of the FA Cup , that is what it is all about...any team on any given day and to some extent the luck of the draw when it is made...
I mean the two semi's had the two Manchester teams against eachother...which would have been a great final, especially with United going for a treble.......and Stoke vs Everton...., so luck of the draw has somethig to do with it...the glory of the event!

The premiership however sorts out the men from the boys and eliminates such luck/good fortune/strange circunstances and one good/bad day....that is why the two co exist and will continue to do so...
Bedsides how else would the Blue side of Manchester ever end that 34 year drought ;D
