Calling all 64 architects--have you gained weight
« on: May 03, 2011, 11:54:10 PM »
xxSo we all accept things have gone down hill in the last couple of years, correct. I remember reading an article in the New England journal of science about Jeffory Cornish some thirty year ago and at the age of 60 he had the heart of a forty or thirty year old and this was directly related to the high amount of walking he did on a daily basis while...working. So, we are all walking less because we are working less and if we continue to have the same eating habits, my guess is that most of the sixty four architects associated with this site have gained weight or i would like to hear about others who have taken approaite measures to counter act the situation such as other exercise programs. So time to confess up, how many have gained weight since the recession started and how much and if you have not what steps in prevention have you taken. And have any of you gotten to the point where you have lost weight because you no longer can afford to buy food! This is not an OT, it is directly related to golf architecture and how most architect gain weights during recessions, I think! It will be intersting to see if those lucky few that are wiorking, if they have been fortunate enough to stay away from weight gains.

I have gained about 10-15 pounds.

Randy:

I had gained about 15 pounds, though I don't know if it's all after the start of the recession.

I'm back down about five pounds in the last month after cutting some things out of my diet, including Coca-Cola.  All those who know me may have a hard time believing that!

Weight gain has been an issue for me, especially the last five years, but frankly, I attribute that to stress eating from the divorce (wish I drank more!) and perhaps reduced business conditions.

In some ways, being busier and traveling (no excersise, eating out) more is more condusive to weight gain than not being busy, which allows gym time, and forces eating at home a bit more to save money.

Coke is nasty, so is diet coke and coke zero. I gained about thrity pounds over the last couple of years during the slow down and in October had a major Ulcer but sine then I have lost forty and have been maintaining since January. I am fifty three point five on the outside but have riden hard during those fifty three years if you know what I mean. I think I am close to 104 compared to normal human lives. So, have been researching nutrition a lot and coke is flat out nasty. Super acid for one and lots of other reasons that it should be consummed on a very limited basis. No other soft drink has the low ph that coke does. My cousin has worked for Coke going on thirty years and he wonīt touch a drop of any their products...that should tell us something. Congrats Tom for kicking it, my step son had to do the same, doctors orders and he is 26, he slept with a glass by his bed and woke up with a glass in his hand and the dentist bills caused me to age three of those 104! COKE IS NO JOKE!

Jeff,
I thought everybody lost weight when they got divorced, I did. All I can say you must have had a great lawyer because usually the Xīs clean our clock so bad that we canīt afford to eat anything but beans and cornbread for five years!

Mike,
I did the same at the begining of November and was a major factor in going from 225 to 185 in about ten weeks. Also 90 percent less meat and fats in general.

I have to agree with the esteemed Mr. Brauer, that actually being busy and on the road is the real recipe to weight gain.  At the end of 2008 after having just finished up several back-to-back-to-back projects with lots of time on the road and in the field I was all the way up to a size 34 waist (don't laugh).

But now after a few years of having a bit of time to excercise and less time spent sitting in cars and planes and with some added stress thrown in due to having some time to consider not having back-to-back-to-back projects, I am now down to 11th grade weight.  For those of you who may know me that probably isn't a good thing.

The other problem in my case is my son's girlfriend, now fiancee, comes over and bakes, bakes, bakes.  You can get second hand diabetes from standing in my kitchen, theres so much sugar there.  She doesn't eat it, he doesn't eat it, but I eat it if its left there.

Recently, my younger daughter started work at Panera and can bring home the left over bakery items.  That hasn't helped.  I have a sweet tooth and have to cut that crap off at the pass by doing the shopping myself and avoiding those aisles.

While not an architect, I have lost 40 pounds since last July. Oddly enough my business has booming during that time allowing me to play more golf, which equals mroe walking. Seriously, I made a real effort starting November 1 to get my weight and health in line. I've been following The Primal Blueprint (http://www.marksdailyapple.com/) as close as possible. I'm down to 170 lb from 210 lb, a 32 in waist from a 38 in waist, and a M shirt from an XL shirt. Plus, I have real muscle definition for the first time in my life.

It's a twp-part strategy with the food I eat being the most important.

Food - I try to not to eat any processed food or refined sugar. That means no pasta, bread, rice, potatoes, chips, etc. Basically no processed carbs. I eat lots of meat (particularly bacon and eggs), vegetables, and some fruit (hopefully no more than one piece a day). I've tried to increase my protein and fat intake. This helps reduce cravings. I drink almost nothing but water any more. There are the occasional exceptions since life needs to be enjoyed.

Exercise - I have three main forms of exercise. The main form is walking. During the non-golf reason I try to walk 2-5 hours per week on my treadmill. During the golf season I walk 2-4 rounds per week on a hilly golf course. Twice a week I do body weight exercises (push ups, pull ups, squats, shoulder presses, and planks). Since these are body weight exercises I can do them anywhere. The whole routine only takes me ahalf hour. That's just one hour a week of weight lifting. Once a week I sprint. The sprint session lasts 4 minutes. I sprint for 20 seconds, rest for 10, sprint for 20, rest for 10 and so on until I have done that eight times. This really kicked up my weight loss.

I'm 36 years aold and have been healthier or stronger in my life. My blood pressure, which was always high, is normal for the first time - 114/67.

Scott:

I have cut down the quantity of cola I consume, to zero.  Not Coke Zero.

You're too young to be in this discussion.  Weigh yourself in when you're 45, and then 50, and report back here!

Last Summer I was 285 (and 6'-6") spent 3 month in Finland.  Hotel had Buffet Breakfast.  At Big plate of eggs and bacon and big bowl of berry yogurt/granola  Didn't eat anything all day, Sat mostly in Bulldozer for 12 hrs, Ate Pasta or Rice (tea kettle cooking in Hotel room) and dark beer for dinner.  Somehow came home at 260.  Since then, slowly back up about 10 -15lbs.  Can't wait to go back next week.
I saw some studies that support eggs and bacon as a means to kickstart metabolism in the morning to a fat burning level.  No refined sugar or carbs limits carvings.
