Southern California (Ventura-ish) in July
« on: May 05, 2011, 11:42:53 AM »
If I were to find myself somewhere between Ventura and LAX for a few days in July and wanting to play golf, is Rustic Canyon the obvious choice? Probably a single day of golf is what I'm talking about. Or is there something enough more interesting than R.C. that is a must-see in the area?

Second question, where in the area whether at golf courses or whatever could I avail myself of a lefty set of rental golf clubs for a day?

I would definitely enjoy playing and seeing Rustic Canyon but I'm afraid that's as far as my knowledge of S.Cal. golf courses extends...

A look at Ojai Valley and a round at Soule Park in Ojai would be my suggestion after Rustic.  Ojai is a short distance above Ventura up in the hills, and is just a lovely place.  Lefty Lynn Shackleford lives there, maybe he's got a spare set he'll loan you!

I have not played the public course that Forrest Richardson remodeled right in Ventura (Buenaventura?) but always enjoy his interesting courses.

Olivas Links is the course you were looking for I think, Bill, and after Rustic I would give it the thumbs up. Olivas is right on the ocean too, you can't see it, but you can see the tops of the boat masts in the harbor from the course and get a great seafood dinner on the Ventura Harbor afterwards. It also will be a little cooler than some inland courses that may get hot in July.
Don't miss Rustic, the best public course in LA area. I also like Angeles National that is within reach of LAX and Malibu CC is a public course that is in the area that is also fun and a good chance to see celebs if your into that kind of thing.
If you have private access then there are a bunch more good courses in that area.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Send me a personal message.
It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

Brent,

Just stating the obvious, by Rustic is a very enjoyable round.  It's an easy walk with lots of strategy.  By July it should be nice and crispy.  Let us know what you think.
