George,

At 385 from the back tee and into the wind, attempting to go at the green was impossible.  And yes, for February, the course was playing fairly fast especially around the greens and including the fringes.  I forget the exact name, but I was told the fringes were a grass called Verde something.  I've never played on it before, but it was perfectly smooth and was a grey color in it's dormant state.

My playing partner and I commented on how the dormant grass looked like the old Anderson Consulting qualifying rounds in Japan back in the mid 90s.  That was the first time I had ever seen a golden colored course!

Carl,

From 385 and into the wind, I hit driver at the 2 fw bunkers which left me a little more than 115 for the approach.  I hit a 9 iron up the hill for my second shot and I did make the putt.

Because of the rolling nature of the hole, the wind into our face probably made it play a little easier.  We didn't have to worry about the ball getting away from us.  I would imagine that with warmer temps and an opposite wind, you have to think a little more about how to play the hole when standing on the tee.

Also, there is something about dormant bermuda that makes me feel all funny inside.  It looks like an incredible playing surface.

Dormant bermuda is a great playing surface.  You should come down and try it sometime!

Thanks Jonathan.  Someone must have misquoted the length of the hole earlier in the thread.  I still like it at 350-385!

Trust me, I'm trying.  Is it dormant in early October?

Although it might be winter in early October where you live, down here it is still 80 degrees! :)

The first hole at Lester George's Ballyhack has this feature.  It's basically a straight, uphill hole with a drive over a deep ravine.  Playing to the right of the fairway gives the shorter forced carry and a shorter, though blind, approach.  Playing to the left lengthens the carry and the length of the approach but allows some view of the green.

Excellent hole (and course!)

Here is the view from the center of the fairway on the 15th hole at Dormie Club...

You can just catch a glimpse of the flag peaking over the hill on the left.

Now, here is the view from the tee...

I think it's very interesting that you can pretty much see the entire green from the tee on a hole where the approach shot is designed to be at least partially blind.  I'm not sure I've seen this before.  Is this a brilliant twist on blindness?  Or does it defeat the purpose of having a blind approach?

Looks ffffing great!
It's all about the golf!

Not sure I agree with the comment on Ballyhack # 1...check out the photos here:  http://s46.photobucket.com/albums/f140/buffalogolfer/Ballyhack-End%20of%20Day-7-18-2010-Album%201/

I don't believe that the green is ever as obscured as it is on this hole at Dormie.
