Things aren't looking good for me to make it. My baby sister had a baby of her own last weekend, and it's looking like the baptism will be on the 4th. I'll try to update it things change.

Evan,

I'm sorry if there was some confusion, but as I mentioned to you before I cannot make the early round at Manakiki. Sleepy Hollow is good, but Manakiki won't work as I will be leaving Saturday morning.

I had a chance to take a quick tour of SH today.  All I can say is that you are in for a treat.  Just hope they don't use a back tee/back pin combination on #2...

Geoffrey...thanks for that "plug"!  We are all anxiously awaiting the big day in just a little voer two weeks now.

We've had a few cancellations recently, so I've updated the guest list above.  I've also asked a few local GCA'rs (Chris Hunt and Shawn Arlia) to try and join us which looks like it may happen.

Still slots available if anyone is interested!

...especially with the (normal) wind in your face on that hole.  One of the few par-3s you'll ever play where a lay-up shot looks extremely appealing from the tee!  :o

Hot, sticky, 5 1/2 hour round at Sleepy Hollow.  Other than that, it was wonderful!

Day started off at 7:00am in Willoughby Hills at Donald Ross' Manakiki.  There were six of us (me, my neighbor Jeff Rog, Bill Steele, Chris Sturges, Ryan Taylor, and Chris Hunt).  Conditions were wonderful, temps were low, and we made it around in 4:20 despite slower groups ahead of us.  All the work done there in recent years has been completed, and the course has grown in nicely.  It is not a terribly difficult course, but there are some tough driving angles/holes out there, and the back nine can certainly be a killer with the last few holes stretch.

Then it was off the Sleepy Hollow in Brecksville for the "jewel" of the outing.  We had a leisurely lunch and haded out for our 1:30pm tee times.  This time around there were nine of us (me, my neighbor Jeff Rog, another friend Shawn Griswold, Bill Steele, Chris Sturges, Ryan Taylor, Jonathan Becker, Chris Hunt and his friend/business partner Ryan Kozak).  The started added a single to our group so we played 3 / 4 / 3.  As mentioned above, the pace has horrific...waiting on every hole and every shot with 2/3 groups stacked up as far as the eye could see.  Beyond that distraction, the course was in good shape running a bit firmer than i would have expected given all the recent rains.  The course is as baffling as ever...so many subtle breaks on the greens, and I never seem to figure them out for some reason. The routing there makes for a really easy / intimate walk, and the green complexes is what really make the course for me. I think that the second hole is a total ball buster, given its position so close to the start of your round, and playing into a prevailing wind.  Even though it is a par-3, I've said before that a prudent play could be to lay-up then chip on otherwise big numbers could be lurking early and a total round killer.  Another hole I think folks take for granted is the par-4 15th...it is short but has the most canted green (back to front) on the course and is a bitch to putt on.

SH has an interesting routing...par 35 on the front with two par-5s and three par-3s, then the back is a par 36 with only one par-5 and one par-3, making for seven tough par-4s to tackle on your way back in.

The cookout turned out to be pretty low key as a few folks had to ditch given our late finish (7:00pm), and unfortunately we lost (literally) Bill Steele on the drive to my house and he neglected to have my number with him (nor me his), so he bolted for Columbus.

It seemed like all who attended had a fun time, and plans are already in the works for some other Northern Ohio, Western Penn gatherings in the future.  Hope these "deals" become a regular occurrence as these are a great group of guys to get together with.

Evan,

Thanks again for setting up this event. It was great to finally meet some GCA'ers.

I really enjoyed Manakiki and the weather was perfect. Cleveland is lucky to have the course / clubhouse in their metro park rotation. The back nine of Sleepy Hollow felt like the 3rd Round of the US Open after a rain delay!

I would like to return the hospitality and would like to invite the Clevelanders down to Pittsburgh for a Th evening / F morning event or a F evening / S morning event. I have a limit on guests at SHGC on F,S,S so I envision a Thursday 4 pm tee time at SHGC and a Friday 10 am tee time at TBD.

Let me know if there is any interest and I will create a seperate thread. Tentative dates that work for me = Aug 11 - 13 & Aug 25 - 27

Glad you still made it down and got to see Sleepy.

Even after a 12-hour day on the course...I woke up at 5:00am Sunday and played another 18 at a local course near my house.  The things we will do to appease our "disease"!

I was just telling my friend who I made my initial trip to see these two courses how you guys had an outing recently.  Funny thing how we didn't have a touch of slow play issues.

Evan, I am curious, was the course you played the next morning one you had played before?  I was wondering of what symptoms you were exhibiting before play.  I think I may know of a cure.

Yes John...the course I played the next day is more or less my "home course" due to its proximity to the home base, relatively cheap rate, and a decent walk (it is called Coppertop at Cherokee Hills).  My only symptoms displayed before the round was a burning desire for more self abuse by playing another round of golf (just can't get enough).

The Sleepy round was great fun (due to the course and company)...but was really dissapointing from a pace perspective.  You could see groups stacked up all over the course.  Tee times there are on 9-minute intervals, which is not horrible...but things just krept along at a snail's pace.  There were no real cart restrcitions either (like paths only or 90-dgree rule), so I'm not sure why it was so horrid.

Due to the family logistics, Bill Steele and I did not get to play with Evan, but we did grab a beer with him after our wonderful round at his beloved Sleepy Hollow GC. Just an absolutely wonderful place for golf:
