I was unaware that Bruce went out on his own.  Nice break for him getting the second course at Ballyneal.

It is nice to know the project is doing well enough financially to take on building a 2nd course.

FWIW, I happened to see this on Ballyneal's website:  "Ballyneal is a private and unique haven for the golfer who prefers to walk the course . . ."

Even Colton will need a cart to play more than 54 holes in one day...

I know Jim Urbina is working on projects on his own, and I seem to recall reading that a number of Renaissance associates have become independent contractors.

As a small businessman in today's economy, I think that's smart business.  Bring the team together for a major project, otherwise everyone practices hunter-gatherer skills!

The blog states that carts will be available for the second course, but on limited basis.  It will certainly be a walking friendly routing, so Colton can keep on truckin.  Ballyneal will be walking only.

I've met Bruce Hepner and he is an extremely interesting and knowledgable architect.  I think he said his major in college was civil engineering but his minor was in art.  Interesting combination.  I think both served him and Renaissance well over the years.

It's a slippery slope.  Up next will be island greens, containment mounding, beer cart girls and 5pm "after work" 9-hole leagues. ;D

Rich, your lack of faith in me is disappointing.

I haven't met Bruce but I do know that he was the project manager on the first course and was pegged as the target architect for the second course early on. I will be out there next month and will definitely check out the new routing and report back.

My understanding is that the 2nd course is intended to boost revenue by attracting non-walking customers in addition to providing more quality golf as a larger attraction for longer visits.

I admit it, I have walked part of routing, not with Mr Hepner, whom I have not met. The "Chop Hills" is great land for golf. I believe the concept of the course and routing will be very complimentary.

Jim Colton is scheduled to walk 108 holes in a day at Ballyneal!...... For charity....... I think people should contact him and pony up some$ for the event!  I am! I am sure he will respond how to help out!!!!!!

Best wishes to Bruce Hepner on his first solo design.  This is a great opportunity and I look forward to his new creation in the Chop Hills.

Question to Mr. Colton, what have you been doing to physically prepare yourself for the 108 hole marathon?  Will you have anyone playing alongside you?  Best wishes!

Jim-

Do you need a caddy to live tweet all 108 holes? If so I'm your guy.* ;)

Will there be cart paths as well on no. 2?...

No.  The carts will travel over the turf, hence the need for a different mixture which can withstand cart traffic.  But I think the overall plan is to design it so that the emphasis will still be on walking with a design eye towards the use of carts.  Carts really can't be used at Ballyneal as the routing of the holes make it almost (but not quite) impossible.  For instance, how would you get a cart around #3 without cutting a path??

Patrick, Ron and others,

This thread should be about Bruce and Ballyneal, not my golf-crazed ideas. I'll post more details on the 108 soon enough.

I think Kyle hit it on the head. I think it broadens the value and enjoyment for the members and their potential guests. Guys like my father-in-law, who has come out every year, can now easily do 18 on one course walking then 18 on the second course in a cart. I'll still be walking for as long as I'm able, but even I could envision hopping on a cart if there was 50 minutes left of daylight for an emergency 18.

Although I would've been perfectly happy playing one course for the rest of my life, I am excited about the prospects of his second course. Ive heard Bruce has the ultimate respect for the original course and I trust he will build a perfect complement. And as long as it's walkable, I'm totally on board. I have no reason to believe otherwise.

I've met Bruce and he's a great guy.

Jim's goal to walk 108 holes started out as a thrown gauntlet, slapped down by one 18 and one early 20's something year old, last summer when they went and walked some gawdawful number of holes.

The charity aspect is fresh. Proceeds will go to help out the care of one of our caddies, who has recently, suffered a terrible and debilitating skiing accident, this winter.

So, please, anyone with the means to give, please consider it. You don't have to wait for Jim's 108 hole marathon.

Please contact the club at 970-854-5900 for more details.
