2027 Ryder Cup
« on: April 13, 2011, 07:40:58 AM »
It is now 2011. Before we blink, this decade will have passed, and the 20's will start creeping in. 2027 marks the centennial year for the inagural Ryder Cup matches, held at Worcester Country Club, Worcester, MA, in 1927. Captaining the American squad was Sir Walter Hagen, and for Great Britian, Ted Ray was captain. The remainder of the teams are listed here; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1927_Ryder_Cup

Should the years trickly by, and the powers at be serving the Ryder Cup committe, have some how overlooked Worcester for hosting the centennial matches, than a great travesty has occurred. 2 years after hosting the infamous U.S Open, in which Bobby Jones penalized himself on hole 11, and lost to Willie MacFarlane by a stroke, what would become the greatest matches in the history of the game, were birthed out of the rolling hills of central Massachusetts.

Not to say The course plays to 6650, par 70. (i think this number may be a little low) There is also plenty of room for tee expansion, but I doubt it would be needed. The 5th hole is a breeze par 5 playing at around 480-490, and if converted to a par 4 would be very difficult. The course would subsequently be moved to a par 69. but that is okay IMO. This is match play, and we want to see birdies!!!

What are people's thoughts on this???

Well, at least Worcester is in the Eastern Time Zone.

Does anybody in Worcester have several million dollars they could throw the PGA of America?

LOL

Worcester still has a great dispartiy of wealth. There is still a lot of money floating around the area. Seen Polar Beverage around? Founded in 1880's still family owned and operated. Wachusett Ski Mountain nearby as well. San Jose Sharks AHL team's home rink is the DCU center. I'm not saying there are lots, but there are most definitly more than a few heavy hitters still in the central MA area. There are also, Hopkinton, Southboro, Westboro, three bedroom communities to Worcester.

Secondly, through the grape vine Jim Remy has been given an honorary membership at the club. Mr. Remy began his career as an Assistant Pro at Worcester.

i'm assuming you are saying that money is the issue. I argue that, money is no problem here. The last big tournament in MA, was in 99, no one in the state wants golf back? Only Worcester would be responsible for procurring necessary funds? No golf associations, state departments, no other individuals not living in Worcester? What about tax breaks and revenue for the city that would come with the tournament?

Jim,

How can we be certain? As you recall the September 11 attacks moved the Ryder Cup back a year, from 99, to 2002. That is the schedule we are on now. Could something like this not happen again? The innagural year would have been in 2027 if not for the date change.

it changed once, it can change again. This is 16 years down the road. For all we know, they could skip a year before 2027, just for the sake of playing on the match's centennial year.

I would certsinly hope and prey we do not have another 9/11, but you never know. I was just stating the facts as we know them today, April 13, 2011.

Jim,

I am just a kid, so please excuse my arrogance.

I wasn't inferring another 9/11 type event. I was more saying that, as of April 13th, 2011, we only know the facts of April 12th, 2011
