St Andrews: Pub & Grub

I am looking for a handful of moderately priced good eateries/pubs in the centre of St Andrews which can comfortably deal with 8 idiots.  Do folks have suggestions?  The following recommendations already received can serve as a guide; please confirm the quality of these restaurants as well.

Grill Hiuse
Glass House
Westport Bar & Kitchen

In 2008 we had dinner for eight twice at Ziggy's off North Street at #6 Murray Place.  The service was friendly and the food a bit above okay.

There's a couple of Bangladeshi curry shops that are good.

The Vine Leaf is very expensive but high quality.

I'm surprised nobody has suggested Dunvegan.

It's just a few steps off the eighteenth green, and the place where most caddies hang out after their rounds.  As far as I am concerned, it's a part of the Old Course experience everybody should try.

The Dunvegan's a great spot but it's hard to get 8 guys in there without a crowbar.  I'd definitely spring for a drink at the bar at the Old Course Hotel overlooking the course, but don't bother eating there if you're watching your pennies.

I second the nomination of the Jigger Inn.  May not be the most comfy place for a meal, but it sure was fun trying to hop the wall on the way out.

Also, we frequented 1 Golf Place a couple of times and I also thought the dinner at The Russell Hotel was nice.

I'll second the bar/restaurant at 1 Golf Place.  It's also a nice place for breakfast and a coffee before heading out.  I also enjoyed my dinner at the restaurant next door (further from the 18th green, at the corner, I believe owned by an American ex-pat).

Man I love that town...

Some good curry houses in St A. Fish'n'Chips of course! Decent pub grub in most hostelries. Road Hole Grill spectacular!

Westgate had very good food on my last visit but make reservations. They can accomodate parties of 8 but fill up quickly. I would second Nahm Jim if you like Thai. www.nahm-jim.co.uk
I have no clue if they have food but the Whey Pat Tavern has good beer and dominos.

I second the room at the Dunvegan.I think one of them is an Aggie but they have overcome.When all else fails the all night petrol station has a microwave,so go ahead and play that third 18.

Actaully, the best meal I ever ate was served up at Fernie Castle, not far from the Old Gray Town, quite close to Ladybank GC. Freshly shot scottish grouse, drenched in a deliciious red wine sauce. Never tasted anything so delectable before or since then!

The mere mention of the Dunvegan compels me to participate in this thread...it is the second worst pub in St Andrews behind the Stables!  ;D

The best 'golf' pub is 1 Golf Place. Also try Greyfrairs on North Street. Its been almost four years since I lived there, but my favourite restaurant was the the Balaka on Market St opposite the student union - sensational Bangladeshi curry restaurant.

Sean, I don't recall going to the Pitcher House, but all the others were fine.

St. Andrews is wonderful for golf, a sound education and romantics in general but epicurism has never been its claim to fame!

Which is the one with ice-cold Bud Light on tap. That would have to be the worst pub in St. Andrews or perhaps all of Scotland.
